Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Recommend a Freesat Receiver please

Just when I thought I had this stuff figured out, I went into two Freesat shops and was bowled over by the array of Freesat receivers available. I stupidly thought that there was a SD receiver and a HD receiver but it turns out that there are many different types, i.e.:

    SD receiver
    HD receiver http://www.freesat.ie/index.php?cat=HD_Receivers
HD receiver that has abaility to take DTT signals as well - see link above
    HD receiver with PVR

Now what I want is a HD receiver for my 1080p tv and a SD receiver for the kids room. PVR is not a requirement but if a receiver has the ability to take DTT signals as well, this would be a bonus but not if it means a multitude of cables.

I am planning on getting an 80cm dish and quad lnb to take above so are there any suggestions as to what would be a good HD and SD receiver to buy to prevent me ending up with something that will be difficult to use and/or obsolete in a year or two. Thanks in advance.

Of those in the link, only the Grundig is a Freesat receiver.

If you want a Freesat HD receiver, I'd say go for the Humax Foxsat HDR
For basic Freesat SD box, the likes of the Grundig/Bush would do.

If you mean a standard FTA receiver as opposed to Freesat specifically, then there are loads! However, it's been expained in various threads the pro's and cons of each.

A good standard FTA box IMO, would be the Technomate TM5200, which has USB port for recording onto external memory.

A combo DTT/Sat HD box, you could choose from the MVision, or Technomate TM6900.

Unlike Freesat boxes, majority of standard boxes cannot display the 7-day EPG, or autotune when channels change frequencies.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll be going with Freesat as it is easy to set up and use.

Now with regard to the Humax receiver, where can I get one as any websites I've tried in Ireland do not seem to stock them. If I have to buy from abroad, will there be any hassle setting it up or is it relatively simple to install?

I bought a Humax HD Freesat box on the internet and I received it about a week ago. I already have Sky HD and I can honestly say that the output from the Humax box is as good. So far it is not as quirky as the Sky box in losing recordings or failing to record programmes. I can recommend it.

just to point out that that is a 'reconditioned' grade unit - still good value I'd say though.

(I got distracted mid post - so hadn't seen Tony's practically identical comment ! )

It should also be noted that only Metronic and Humax have actual stock out in the shops...

All the Alba brands (Bush, Grundig, Goodmans) are not available for purchase at the moment for one reason or another.

Personally, I bought the Bush HD box at christmas for £97 in Argos in Belfast (sorry local guys, but I was up there and they were offering almost parity for the Euro) and I am delighted with the box. The HD picture looks great, as do the SD pics. My only issues are with the remote control (angle of use is not great) and there is a bug with the epg - if you scroll too quickly through the channels, you loose audio.

Apart from that, I would highly recommend the box, only problem is, you probably wont find one.

There is also the often forgotten but highly regarded Technisat HDFS with HD USB recording from full freesat EPG

    Bumpy Bump!

Thinking of getting Humax HD Freesat Receiver at amazon for £119. Has anyone got a better box than this for that price?

    Thanks

Arguably the Technisat HDFS is a better receiver as it allows you to record to USB drive.
It has also received very favourable reviews.
