Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have yet to take a decent photo with a camera phone - I was told that some of the more recent models, including the latest Samsung, have camera's on board every bit as good a medium to low range p & s . Any truth in this ?

The samsung assume you mean tocco?Has quite a bad camera
But the LG viewty 199 or less i think has a seriously accpetable camera
I'd be pleased with that shot from any camera phone

I haven't found one I'd consider as good as a low-end P&S, mostly because they all seem to use crappy plastic pinhole lenses. My Sony Ericsson K800i is one of the few models that has the ability to focus, which improves things somewhat, but its still shooting through a tiny plastic lens onto a tiny sensor.

Nokia 6233 is pretty good as a standby when you don't want to lug a real camera about with you.

Don't fall into that trap! 8 megapixels crammed onto a sensor smaller than a crappy point and shoot means more noise than you can imagine! I've found phones like that other Sony Ericcsson mentioned that have a flash of sorts are best because the noise isn't so overriding in lowish light.

Nokia N95's take brilliant photos IMO. They've got a Carl Zeiss 5Mp lens and decent features inc. exposure compensation, white balance, ISO settings etc.

The viewty was one that I was told was good, the other was the latest version of Samsung after Tocco -

The salesmen still think the increase in megapixels means better camera, so I won't fall for that - but he reckoned the viewty and the new Samsung have the same makeup, as a standard p & s, so in theory pic quality will be as good - is this bull ?

Actually it might possibly be the U900(soul as it's sometimes called) and a flickr search shows decent images

I had the n95 and it was ok-ish, resolution was there but contrast wasn't
this is one with N95 (gen 1)
    normal_30092007046.jpg
    click for full res

some sony (some 880 I recall) was very impresive, nice skin tones and contrast

I have the Nokia N96 (DON'T buy one!). The camera isn't bad at all though. I keep forgetting to use it. As a phone it was the worst money I have ever spent on anything :(

This is one I took with a Sony Ericsson K800 with 3.2MP a couple of years ago. I'm happy enough with it. I since bought the SE K850 with a 5MP camera and its much worse.

I have the Sony Ericsson K800i for ages, and its the best camera phone ive ever used

and before that, it was the K750i

The K800i, even at only 3.2Mp, still beats any other high MP phone I've used [Nokia N95, LG Viewty...]

and the reason is the flash

Sony Ericsson are still the only ones to consitently use top quality Xenon flash on their phones

The rest just up the MP count, but still throw in a lousy LED Flash

And because of the flash, you get the faster shutter speed, so ye dont get bad noise from a high ISO, and ye dont need the crap IS features that are rarely any use anyway

The C905 is the new 8mp Sony Ericsson, and its at the top of my shoppin list

+1 for the k800i, mine great for a backup of a backup if you get what i mean!
However i think 3.2mp is the limit for camera fones for noise vs detail..... The same way in a compact 6-8 mp is the ideal.

In a aps-c dslr the limit is about 12-15mp and a full frame bout 18-25mp.....

Had a good laugh when a friend tried to convince me the a teeny 14 mp compact would give better quality then a 10mp slr :)

I dunno  8Mp for a camera phone is lunacy. The maths don't work as mentioned earlier.

Another vote here for Sony and the K800

Here is a great photoblog where the owner used a Handspring Visor PDA and a camera module to take photos.

Could they apply any MORE noise reduction to that ? Pretty appalling quality TBH. And thats in a brightly lit situation.

That whole carl-zeiss lens thing always makes me laugh. No point polishing a turd etc etc etc
