Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ok so this is going to be a bit of a mess.. and lots of unnecessary info but im hoping someone can help me on this :)

I want to go and live in America in around the new york area.. Its been something ive wanted for the last 2 - 3 years after having gone there for a week when I finished school.. I really started to think about it the last few months, having found out how impossible it is to get over there for longer than 90 days.. Ive narrowed it down to one real way of getting over there.. Through work..

When I finished school I started college but soon quit because I wanted to take a year off and work and save up some money which is what ive done the past 2 years.. Now the reccession has finally took my job away and made me focus on a proper career.. :D hurray!! So im starting a year long photography course in september then im going to move on to college in WIT and see what I can do there.. I was going to start doing this myself but I realise ye lot will know alot more than I will! I want to compile a list of companies/jobs/studios etc that have places here in Ireland aswell as America. I realise some of the places may be gone in the next fours years and its probably to early to start this but I still want to be prepared and get to know everything.. Rather be safe than sorry as they say..

Also one more question for the people who have went through college.. did you all do photography or did you do something else that got you into a photography job? As far as im aware you can get do masters in photography or can you? Im not fully sure..

Any sort of information would actually be the best thing ever. :)

sorry if that was hard to read btw I just rambled on :P

Do whatever courses you can while they're free. College is probably the handiest place to be in this 'current economic climate'* that everyone's rambling on about. As far as diving in to NY is concerned, don't go looking for a place to live in NY, anyone that's enjoyed living there has lived in Hoboken, in the state next door.

Tbh, chances are, if you move over there straight away, you're going to end up working in a bar or restaurant to get you by - And the easiest way to dip your feet in the water is going to be a J1 - Try not to do it when everyone else in Ireland is doing the same though.

If you can get steady work, even if it's someplace ****ty, you'll be able to pay your accomodation, and try get your foot in the door elsewhere.

As far as college goes, I did Fine Art, specialising in Media, which is the newer mediums of the art world, video, animation and so on, and specialising further into photography. You can indeed do an Ma in photography, and there's plenty of places that'll do it, ranging from the sh*te to the best. Depends on where you come out at the end of your degree. Most of the top notch Ma's will require you to have some experience working in the field you want to get into. You're also better off specialising in an area, rather than a catch all Ma.

Doing FA:M has served me a lot better than any Photography course, I've been able to do what I want to do as regards photography, rather than what the course requirments make me do so I get a good grade - It's a lot more creative than other courses.

Fwiw, I may or may not have just gotten my foot in the door with quite a nice fashion mag from NY. Go me.

*Oh how I hate that phrase. Twats.

I was thinking the exact same.. If I do get over there it wont be all gravy straight away.. Im going be working in something like that and im totally fine with it..

Right so specialise in an area.. I don't reckon WIT do fine art.. Ill have to look at there courses I might have to go to a different county to do so.. which is not something I want to do.. but I will if I have to and cant find anything better.. I would like to work in some sort of media for a magazine.. Thats top of the list! Magazine!

You can get over there through them right? It doesn't have to be a Irish company.. if you work for them and they want to keep you they can bring you over that way?

    Thank you btw kind sir!!

a course in photography doesnt mean you'll get a job... but it certainly will help you, you can take as much as you want from a course but you are your own person, teaching only gets so much done...Doing BA in photography
