Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We have a Bokeh Wednesday thread....
How about a 'Depth of Field' Friday thread ???

Here's one I took (maybe not the best example) with an old Nikon 135mm lens on an Olympus:

So.......show us your DoF pictures for inspiration :p

What the? These photos are bokeh photos. I thought with depth of field everything has to be in focus no?

I would have thought that a Depth of FIeld photo would be one which showed a particular type of DoF? Like in my pic where the focus is on a partucular part of the pic, showing what the DoF was.

People around here think that everything out of focus/blurry is Bokeh. They are wrong.

In fact, i would have said that most of the pics in the Bokeh thread are DoF photos.

Sorry if it sounds too general, I was looking for peoples 'best of' or most interesting DoF photos. I started off with a bad one, but there have been some good ones since.

My understanding is that bokeh is how 'nice' the out of focus area is..... Dof is the area behind the subject and weather it is in focus or not

In other words, an image where the depth of field, whether shallow or deep is one of the main elements of the image?

XLR8's image for example is a perfect specimen of depth of field progression, whereas Borderfox's images are beautiful examples of well controlled DOF. I presume that's what you meant:)

DoF is the amount of picture that's in focus, not the stuff in front of whatever is in focus, not the stuff behind whatever is in focus, it's a measure of the stuff that's IN focus. So Valentia is not entirely correct in that you can have a picture that's entirely out of focus (and therefore zero DoF) except for maybe a few molecules of air in front of the lens but they don't count, do they?

Anyway, here's something with a very shallow depth of field:

    [

I would say that bokeh isnt just out of focus lights in the background, but incorporating the out of focus bits of a picture to set the scene of the picture or add to the composition, as well as adding nice colour to background.

I cant explain my interpretation very well, but i can say that i think that it certainly isnt just setting the focus to manual and taking pictures of out of focus lights.

Wasn't the meaning of bokeh discussed in detail already in the bokeh thread?

Depth of field is different and easier to grasp, I think. It refers to the range of distances a subject may be from the lens and still remain 'in focus', therefore a photo can have a large or a small depth of field. All photos have a depth of field.

Can we please rename this thread 'Small DoF', as this is what most of the photos posted exhibit? Otherwise may as well have a thread called 'Focal Length' without specifying which focal length we're talking about. Or, indeed, a thread called the Random photo thread :p

All these images taken with the MP-E 65mm @ f2.8 x5 magnification. The DOF is about 1 tenth of a mm....

Sorry for the big pics but you wouldn't be able to see the DOF with smaller images.

did you even read the thread ? There are several pointers there as to how to achieve narrow DOF, it's geared more toward that specific P&S they talk about, but they're generally applicable.

    Interesting thread.
This is my humble effort, it shows very shallow depth of field.
You can see a thin vertical strip that is in focus and contains the letter E.
