Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Who do you think it is and why? I've heard Paul Osam was immense and should have been called up for the Ireland national team, but I can't say I seen him much.

Joe Gamble? Brian Murphy? Kevin Hunt?

Obviously must be Sir Bobby Charlton. He played for Waterford for a season.

Didn't George Best play for Cork Celtic?
Can't say if he was up to much myself...

    ...Mark Rutherford is better anyhow.

You mean in recent times or historically? Roy Keane, George Best, or Johnny Giles.

As you can see here, players like Geoff Hurst couldn't have hacked it over here tbh. :pac:

Assuming you're talking about best players while actually playing in the league, Glen Crowe would have to be a contender.

No contest imo. Bobby Charlton is the winner.

    George Best.

Players that spent their full or majority of their career in the league.

    Hilary Carlyle
    Turlough O'Connor
    Brendan Bradley
    Paul Doolin

If I had to choose it would be Carlyle.

Good choices, apparently Doolin is the most decorated LOI player in league history

Liam Coyle was the best I've seen in my time supporting the league.

    Overall best, maybe Raich Carter.

George Best was just a fat mess by the time he played for Celtic.

In my time watching, Houlihan was the one I used to enjoy watching the most but clearly not one of the greats

Heary would have overtaken him as a player, it was osam with 6 titles. Heary has to have more now and a few of that cup thing that happens once a year.

i'm laughing at people saying bobby charlton and others. they played like 1 season in ireland so hardly enough to warrant best LOI player ever.

Surely the thread can be interpreted as the best player to ever play in the LOI, no ? I dont see your point. Sir Bobby was the best player to ever grace the league in my opinion by a country mile. As another poster said already Best was a mess when he played. Sir Bobby joined Waterford at 37 years of age made 31 appearances and scored 18 goals. Hardly an over the hill return. There are obviously other good players who played many seasons in the league but never reached the heights achieved by Charlton. The fact the guy was a World cup winner, European cup winner and a Ballon d'Or winner has him head and shoulders above anyone else who graced the league.

+1 for Liam Coyle, the goal against Athlone on the last day of the season in 95 was special even though Dundalk went on to take the title.
