Ration holiday flights to cut pollution, says Gordon Brown's adviser

Michael O' Leary will be delighted to hear all this. :pac:

Millions of families could be barred from taking holidays abroad under a UK Government proposal to ration flights. Gordon Brown's environment adviser is calling for limits on how many plane journeys each travellers can take each year.

Lord Turner suggested that Britons might have to cut back on their overseas breaks. He said the Government should urgently consider imposing individual restrictions to help reduce pollution caused by planes. Lord Turner, chairman of Parliament's climate change committee, said: 'We will have to constrain demand in an absolute sense, with people not allowed to make as many journeys as they could in an unconstrained manner.'

His remarks will anger business and tourism groups, as well as infuriating those who make regular trips abroad. The airline industry is also fiercely opposed to limits on flights.

What a load of bull. Why not look at the sectors that are really causing environmental damage like power generation, industry and road transport? Why not look properly at replacing oil with a viabale, renewable form of power that can reduce aviation emmisions instead of the short term fix of reducing flights?

Its annoying how narrow minded governments are. Fix the problem instead of curtailing the problem. So everyone in the world is expected to reduce their holidays and time abroad instead of trying to find a better fuel then oil? Arrrgh..meh

Dont worry, that will soon be on the cards.. literally. You can be damn sure the UK will come out with some kind of a "smartcard" that will tot up your weekly carbon footprint and tax you accordingly. This is where the loyalty cards can be used and turned against us.

Ironic that this should be considered as their country shivers under tons of snow:pac:

I doubt if it would happen anyway. The UK would be alone in that insanity, not only that it would be political suicide to restrict the right of it's citizens to travel when and where they like. There are some serious fruitcakes floating around the British government these days.

The Brits are quite tolerant of things most people simply wouldn't put up with. But they have their limits.

Its even more ironic considering the current fascist Labour government gave the go ahead for a third runway at Heathrow in January.

    hahaha!!!

More security cameras in England than anywhere else in the world too apparently.

    Strange.

Not a workable plan anyway, I mean, it could be technically feasible but it'd make Brown and Co look awful and possibly would be against EU rules.
