How to pop image and fade background page

    Hi all,
    I'd bookmarked a site ages ago but seemed to have lost it.
    I'm looking to create a simple web gallery on my site. Click on the thumnail and the image pops up. I'm sure everyone has seen what I mean.
    When you click on the thumbnail the image pops up in the same page but the "background" fades. I've seen it on numerous sites.
    As far as I can remember it was just a simple case of inserting some code to achieve this.

    Could someone point me in the right direction please?
