I am so mad. I've been working in my office for almost 3 years where i secured my apprenticeship early on. My boss led me to believe (assuring me even 3 weeks ago) that i would be paid the minimum wage as laid down by the law society. He then, ten days ago took on another apprentice who has done a bit of filing and now refuses to pay me anything. Also, because he now has two apprentices he will not be giving me full time work after ppc1 (Im starting in a couple of weeks) because he will have to divide the hours between us. I am shocked and disgusted. I made it quite clear earlier that i would not proceed with my training unless i was paid the minimum wage and satisfied the covenants of the contract. But this all happened today on my last day. I am disgusted. It's important to me that i get adequate training so that i may be confident and capable in my role as a solicitor and not do some half hearted pathetic excuse of a traineeship that looks great on paper and means nothing in reality.

So early on in my career i am let down by the integrity of this profession and time and time again i have defended it. I have heard the law society turns a blind eye to all of these situations we find ourselves in and it sickens me that our very own regulating body can do nothing or perhaps will do nothing to protect us. It is little wonder that this profession is a snake pit.

    Hi Satsuma,

I am really sorry to hear what happened to you, I have heard numerous horror stories in relation to the way trainees have been treated and for the most part the law society have turned a blind eye. You could probably report him/her to the law society especially if he has already signed the deed of apprenticeship and you have been working there in advance but that's not really going to help employee/employer relationship and realistically he/she can easily replace you (sorry but it is true).

I have been working in my firm for over 2 years and I am due to go into ppc1 in september and I would have been devastated if same thing had happened to me. It wouldn't have been as bad if you had only just started working there (although still pretty mean) but you would think after being there for 3 years he/she would have acted a lot better. Did he/she explain why he took someone else on, was it a family favour or clients daughter/son (which is no excuse but at least he didn't sack you in preference for them).

If I were you I would start apply as soon as you get into PPC1 to see if anyone else will take you after you come out in April. You clearly have a lot of experience and you will have the advantage of already having completed ppc1 and therefore will be a more attractive to employers than someone who only has there fe1s and no experience. You also probably have a no. of contacts in the legal field from work who might be able to help you find another solicitor to train with.

I know a number of people who have been let go with just 6 months left in their apprenticeships, who have offered to work for free etc just so they could qualify and they where still shown the door even though the practices were doing ok (thankfully all have managed to find other solicitors to take them on for the last few months). While this is a horrible time to be a trainee solicitor there is hope of you finding someone after PPC1 and you will get the proper training you deserve.

I really hope it works itself out, best of luck!

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me if Form 4 has to be witnessed by another solicitor?

It says under the 'Most Common Mistakes when executing the Indenture Deed' is 1. Failing to get the signatures witnessed - it does not state who has to witness them. However, on the right hand side of the bottom of Form 4 - it states 'Declared before me a Commissioner for Oaths/Practising Solicitor.... etc.' but it has an asterisk stating 'Delete if inapplicable'.

It does however state in the PPC1 Application Pack under Part 2 'Applying to the Law Society' that 'Anyone except you training solicitor can witness your Indenture Deed'.

    Thanks,

    Sarah

Is it possible to get a syllabus for PPC1? I am making LLM choices and was just wondering if any of the modules would make life a bit easier once I get to PCC1. I couldn't find it on the Law Society website - even just the titles of the courses would be a huge help.

you can have anyone witness your signatures, once its not a family member. i got the legal secretary where i work to witness it, and then got another practicing solicitor to swear it at the end of form 4.

    • Foundation Course
    • Applied Land Law
    • Probate & Tax
    • Business Law
    • Litigation (Civil & Criminal)
    • Skills - Civil & Criminal Advocacy, Interviewing & Advising, Legal Research, Legal Presentation Skills, Legal Writing & Drafting, Negotiation & Professional Development.
Doubt an LLM makes a difference for PPC- not theory/academics so much as practical skills.

Firstly, I wish all the new trainees starting on the PPC next week all the very best of luck. I was in the the same boat myself a couple of years ago and my advice, for what it is worth, is enjoy every minute of your training it really races by so quickly and secondly never trust anything the Education Dept. of the Law Society tell you!

It appears that there are just under 350 trainees enrolled on the 2009 PPC I Dublin course, which is down from 560 in 2007. A fall of nearly 40% in just two years.

350 is still a higher number than i thought would be in Blackhall this year, I wonder how many are enrolled in Cork?

I wonder how many are enrolled in Cork?

About 150. Asked the girl on registration day, she said it was slightly higher than expected.

    Can't wait til Tuesday!!

150 is a good number seen as alot of people didnt think Cork would be open this year.

    Extremely jealous :(

    350 in dublin and 150 in cork = 500
    last years numbers = 595
so the numbers are not bad at all. i was thinking they would be lucky to have 300, cant believe it is as high as it is.

how many people have completed their fe and are looking for a training contract?

Also does anyone know the pass rate of the fe-1?
i've never heard of anyone giving them up, everyone seems to pass them in the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,169 ✭✭✭dats_right

A 150 on Cork PPC? First thing that springs to mind is 'Large pinch of Salt' because that would be truly remarkable number bearing in mind there was only a 100 on the largest ever PPC I in 2007, that would mean that there has been a 50% increase in numbers in that period when the Dublin numbers are down 40%, to be fair I would think that extremely unlikely. It surely couldn't be that the Law Society are stretching the truth now could it?

About 50% pass rate per individual subject.

Yeah most do, but I've known a few alright who didn't, some did the King's Inns exams and are now barristers, others left the law altogether.

I heard it was 60 in cork this year. Just my two cents :)

Actually does anyone know what the dress code for PPC1 is? More formal or is it college/jeans type wear?

Just received this response from the law society just in case anyone else is wondering.

"Your results were posted to your home address. A copy of your results letter will be sent to your training after 10 working days from Friday 16th July."
