Just letting people know there is a public meeting going to be held on 23rd February @ 8pm in the Plaza Hotel in Tallaght. It is to highlight the issues around department closures within the hospital to make way for "centres of excellence" within the City Centre.

At present the two key departments/units that are being closed are the Breast Cancer Unit and the Childrens Accident and Emergency.

The Children's Accident and Emergency Department is to close, making way for an "Urgent Care Unit" - with NO overnight beds.

The Breast Cancer Clinic is also due to close in April and patients reallocated to St. James', Vincent's and the Mater. An audit on the Breast Care Unit published in July 2008 shows that the unit serves a population of 500,000 people. No measures are being taken to keep any kind of clinic within Tallaght Hospital for the 1400 new cancer cases a year, or the existing cases.

Further details are on Tallaght Hospital Action Group's website : www.tallaghthospitalactiongroup.org
