    Has anyone else noticed that nearly everyone soft drink you see seems to have this labelled on the side of it, what exactly is that for?

    Phenylalanine is a naturally occurring amino acid which happens to be sweet tasting. You're made of the stuff, so ingesting it is actually good for you. Even if it does give you gas.

    It's always listed on the side of food that contains it cos there's a rare but really serious condition called Phenylketonuria that causes progressive brain damage, anyone suffering from it has to seriously restrict the amount of phenylalanine in their diet

    It is in diet coke, and a lot of diet drinks. I think some of the other sweeteners might not have it, there are several types used.

    A lot of "no sugar added" dilutable drinks will have it too.

    It usually says "Contains a source of phenylalanine." which I see as equivalent to those traces of nuts warnings, but in this case it definitely does have traces in it.
