I get that. I'm abusive/ uncaring. I don't care. I'm a realist and tired of sugar coating facts for idiots who can't deal with reality. Flowers and peace and all that aside, dramatism doesn't beget apathy, it is the opposite. And by the way, the working class are easily the most abusive social group in the country, voting No on Lisbon for retarded reasons and always complaining about people from other countries. I'm sick of it. What right do they have to bash my opinions of them when I have seen nothing to the contrary? When their zealous, directionless asses conform to the nanny state and complainer state ideology and still get nothing at all done?

Your quite clearly annoyed about something and taking it out here.
Relax ,breathe deeply and calm down.

Look whoever you are. You have crossed every line! I didn’t call you a neo Nazi. I called u neo right wing, just a slight bit of a difference coming from someone who is fronting himself as Cleary more intelligent than us "WC"-you should know the difference!!!!.
As for your blatant threat - "so be quiet and get off the internet. It can really hurt people like you". PM me details on how we can deal with this juvenile threat. I will gladly oblige. As I have stated I am not aligned to any political party, I am obviously not a racist but I wont accept some fat geek threatening me online!

I agree! but if you read through that guys post this evening, there is no discussion just utter provocation! he insults basically the majority of the population without fact or substance. I know this site does not promote that sort of behaviour, but it just angered me so much.

Indeed, and from the abuse I just got via PM he's permanently banned from this forum. Forget about him, it's just a troll trying to get a rise out of people.

I don’t accept the "global problem" reply. This country is in dire straits. quote]

Imo and I'm sure many others will agree that international recession has just componded and brought the problems created by our government and the banks into light and the public domain.

Cowan and his cronies used the international recession as an excuse, a cover up about their appalling management of the country. Any muppet can hide fundamental problems by throwing plenty of cash at a problem as the government did when massive amounts of cash was at their disposal. But it all comes on in the wash when the funds dry up. That's exactly what's happened with our country.

Johnboy, Totally agree with all you said. The only way forward for this country is a complete rethink on how we govern! We were not called the banana republic in the 80's for no reason.
The tiger masked all those problems that still exist. A complete overhaul on how this country is governed is needed. The ordinary people - best in the world! but the minority have dragged us through the dirt, ruined our international reputation without any accountability!

Totally agree with Irishtoffee and JohnBoy but if we have an election it will only drain more money on our finances, which we don't have.

We, the people have to take some of the blame as we didn't listen to David McWillimams or George Lee, they were saying for years that the bubble will burst. The schools didn't get built, the motorways didn't get done, Bertie gave money to the unions willy nilly. Social welfare is three times what it is in Britan, don't know what it is the rest of Europe but know the childrens benefit is much higher. Both, I must add I get.

Thank you another person who though Dave Mc AND Georgie should be runnin the country. This country has been messed up for years why in my opinion?

We never knew how to deal with the wealth. F/Fial are donin this F/Fail are doing that. The sweat of the workers done it. I can quote many reasons why foreign nations set up here the 2 most important are

    1. Low corporation tax: Big meeting for this one,
Brien Cown: Hi Bertie we need to encourage more business here what will we do.
    Bertie: Lower the corporation tax
Brien: Jasus that was stressful I am off to offaly.

    2. High standard of education
The work force despite attempts of the gov to cut education has achieved a high standard of education

I always tell people the govt has its voters those who love them. Its those who say " I am not voting" is the problem they are contributin directly to the nations incompetent status

Get out next year an vote, Vote indepent if you have to. God bless the man look at what tony greg achieved!

Get out and defend our self respect cause really we are the biggest bunch of inmompetent fools I have ever saw.

By the way if you do vote: Congratulations dont loose faith your day will come!

I do vote and don't vote for the party which my grandfather, father, husband, vote for. People in this country, and many others will vote for tradition, not the paryy which will give the country the best politically and economically.

Good, another person with sense. never understood why our parents raised us to be intelligant, outgoing and independent and the first major decision in our life we ask " What did you do" and spend the rest of our life voting the way they did.

Your parents raise you to be opinionated Read the facts and make decisions on the facts. My dad was a F/F man. my mam a F/G Women. They both refused to tell me until I formed my own opinion.

I agree that we are not well served by our elected representatives. But whose fault is that? Our T.D.s don't fall from the sky. We vote for them, then spend five years complainting about them and then when an election comes round vote for the same politicians we gave out about for the previous 5 years. If anyone is incompetent is us. Ok, If we're so pissed off with the current "Shower" next time you go into your polling booth put a big X next to all the independents, People Before Profit, Sinn Fein, the fix the pot hole on the road man, the Monster raving looney party anyone, anyone except the big parties and I guarentee you the next goverment would be very very different.

wouldn't we just end up with more of the same?

I've not got great faith in the folks we got right now, but I'd have even less faith in the "fix the pot hole in the road man" and his ilk.

wouldn't we just end up with more of the same?.

This is EXACTLY the principle that FF et al relys upon.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Correct. People keep voting for more of the same, in case the alternative turns out to be more of the same.

Irish solution to an Irish problem, really.

Yes. Ireland also has the most incompetent voters!

    Unfortunately a VERY accurate statement.

The abysmally low traditional turnouts at both Local and National elections as well as Referenda only underlines the Donkey nature of the Irish population.

We as a culture have become so enamoured with always having somebody to blame,ie: Their Britannic Majesties, that we developed this sense of isolation from taking decisions.

Turnouts of 40% plus at Elections simply do not point to a well educated and committed electorate.....CJH had it down to a T......Keep them in Beer N Crisps and we`ll be grand !!

Absolutely bang on the money with that statement.

The usual excuses will probably follow about not being able to get home in time when living elsewhere. These people are just as bad as they don't bother changing their registry address.

Those who don't bother their arses voting should put up and shut up as they have done sweet f**k all to determine any political outcome in the country.

Thinking about UK MPs, it seems that whilst many of them stand for election in their home constituencies, quite a few of them don't, and the latter get comparatively safe seats because of their worth to the particular party which they represent. The latter group seems to be made up of old party stalwarts and some highly intelligent "specialists", covering various areas of expertise e.g. economics.

Looking at what we've got here in North Kerry, for example, the local TDs and Senators are local to the area and, taking FF, Labour and FG's offerings, not one of them is of any worth to anyone save themselves. In fact, for the little that they do, they may as well not be here at all.

Are there such seats as party-safe ones in Ireland, and if so, what calibre of candidate gets them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 756 ✭✭✭themacdaddy

    Short answer is YES.

If it`s calibre you`re seeking, how about the Cooper-Flynns,Healy-Rae`s,Hanifins,Haughey`s,Coughlin`s,Cowen`s,Lenihan`s,...crikey this is going to be a long list.......about 160 I reckon....

Strangely enough, that's exactly what I expected to see.

So, basically, Pat O'Dynasty, knuckle-dragging, thick as a brick, barely made it through the Junior Cert, is selected, and goes on to win a landslide victory.

Perhaps this slightly unfair in that most of them received the best education that their respective dynasties could buy, although this special treatment doesn't make any of them anywhere near world-class politicians. They just seem to think that they are.

Hopefully, after what's taken place in recent months, the electorate will be questioning their local candidates more with regard to their capabilities, instead of automatically putting that No. 1 next to the same name that's been handed down generation after generation.

Generally people say the buy that got in last time was good for the area and the opposition candidate wasn't as good in my experience.

Now no offense to anyone but what a bull attitude to have. Of course the guy in power did more for the are than the guy without power. He had the power to do more!!

Couldn't they adapt the voting system?
Why can we not vote online using our PPS numbers?

How do the American Military do it?

I often get the feeling that we are not enabled, specifically to prevent people voting.

Online voting would be insecure or at least any vote done over it could be questioned IMO.

In fact I wouldn't be happy about any type of e-voting unless there was also a paper verification system in place. Both would probably be the ideal way of doing it with each voter having a receipt of who they voted for should both be called into question.
