Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thinking of selling my 1968 Porsche 912???

    HI all,

I am new to these boards and have enjoyed reading the classic car threads.

I am thinking of selling my '68 Porsche 912. I have owned it for around 8 years, having imported it in to the Uk from Los Angeles. I moved to Dublin 3 years ago, and registered the car here in Ireland. It currently sits in the drive of my parents in laws house, and i maybe use it once a month for a soin round the block.

given the current econmic situation, I am wondering whether I can justify keeing it. Since I have been in Ireland I have searched for comparables to base a value on, but to no success, so am at a loss as to what sort of price level the car might fetch?

I appreciate without photos it is difficult to comment, and I will try to upload some when I get home later.

In my opinion it is in a good everyday driving condition, taxed and insured, very original, (not a show car) but would benefit from a little TLC, (time more than money) It was last resprayed 2yrs ago. Prior to that I had it resprayed after I imported it.

Any thoughts on a ball park figure would be appreciated?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey Borgman,
I know your car, I had noticed it close to my office in the Coombe while out for the occasional de-stressing lunchtime walk...
Mine is almost identical except I have fuchs fitted (oh, and webers!).
I really have no idea what they are worth but know that they were catching up on the early 911 prices... They are supposed to be more expensive to restore!
If anyone is considering this on here, it's a nice car and sure to bring a lot of pleasure. They are cracking cars and a lot easier to live with than the 911. I have both and would sooner grab the keys from the 912 when going for a spin..

    Hi CFD,

Thanks for the reply...Yep, I used to live in Blackpitts but moved last year. The car now sits out at the parents in law in Clonskeagh. I'm guessing you are the owner of the other black 912 I have seen parked in the Coombe now and again? I've seen your car a few times and it looks sweet. I do prefer the Fuchs, and had always thought about buying a set to replace the original steel wheels mine has...but same old story with funds and all...

Out of interest, where do you get your 912 serviced, is there anyone you recommend in Dublin,or do you do your own maintainance? I'm ok at the basics but it could really do with a good tune up, especially if i might sell it.

Have seen a black 911 around Dublin a good bit as well, with hella spot lights on the front bumper..I'm sure it belongs to Shane Horgan the Leinster winger?

Anyway, cheers for the advice, and good to find a fellow 912 owner in Dublin.

    Hey Borgman,
Yep, That's mine. I love it a LOT. I have found it to be totally reliable since I had a rebuild a few years back. I don't really use anyone in Dublin tbh, as I've said before, too many mishaps with specialists here in the past.
I use a man in the North, if you want his number, PM me.
Yes, that is Shane's car, he lives not too far from you and parks it outside his house!
Thanks for the advice over on the 928 thread, I'll let you know how I get on.
If I could offer my own, don't sell the 912. The market is a bit funny here with that marque as people don't really know what they are - hence, what they're worth.
Your car is probably worth more in the UK. Check out this site - http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/index.php and ask the lads over there for some advice. I've found them to be great.
My car is US also & I know that regardless of what happens financially, I'd never sell it.

Actually, it looks like yours has the US headlights and is a LWB.
Mine's quite different in fact! Here is my 911 (same body as yours) beside my 912 a few years back..

I have imported and sold a good few 912's over the years, and as CarlosFandango mentions, prices have been creeping up steadily to reflect the enormous "practicality" of the 912 as opposed to the 911. Performance wouldnt' be the deciding factor for someone wanting an old shape 911, so a 912, with 4 cylinder engine as opposed to the 6 pot, offers better reliability, more economy and easier maintenance (setting up twin-carbs is easier than setting up two tripple-carbs). Also, a well setup 912, which is lighter and where the (shorter) engine doesnt hang out as much behind the rear axles, will outperform a 911T on the twisty bits!

Therefore prices for good/very good 912's have risen steadily, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they're on par with 912's, because prices for early 911's have also risen sharply over the last couple of years.

If I were to get a 912 in the sort of condition that I suspect your car is in, not a show winner, but a reasonably presentable example, with some minor rust issues here and there, in need of some minor TLC, I would reckon prices would be hovering in and around the 10-14k, depending on the service records and condition of the running gear. I mean, a rebuild on these 356/912 engines, is still by no means cheap and you should budget in and around 3-4k !. Good to very good cars will be doing anywhere between 14 and 18k, with the near concours and minters going for an excess of 20k.

Thanks for the advice guys, its great to have finally got to get the opinion of other owners, who know the classic Prosche scene in Irleand beter than myself.

The car is original US spec from when I imported it it, original high back recaros, uncut dash, only real thing I have had done is new outer sills replaced 2 years ago, when I had the car resprayed. There is a small 20 cent hole in the passengerr footwell that needs to be fixed, and some of the interior trim needs tidying...but is all there!

Running gear is sound, 4 speed gearbox, and standard twin carb 1600 engine. Often made round round trips to Cork and Kerry with no problems.

The value you are suggesting is around what I would have guessed but as I said for me its been hard to tell when I've not been in Ireland too long..Still have trouble getting my head round the price of cars here compared to the uk!!

Luckily when I registered the car here, there was no VRT cos of age.

It is cheap to run and keep. Never let me down in 8 years, so maybe I;ll hang on to it a bit longer.

Cheers again for all the advice...

tbh, and I know I'm presuming a lot - if you've owned the car that long, it's probably paid for. Which, effectively, means it's free transport. Tax/Insurance/Maintenance are required on everything, so that all cancels out.

Can't see you motoring cheaper, really..........and it is v.nice.

Shane Horgan does has a '68 911 in black, and has the two hella spots on the front. Nice car, and RHD!

Hi Borgman, thats a really lovely car you have there, I would reconsider selling it TBH.

Love yours too CFD, and I saw a lovely black US spec 911 in Donabate last summer.

Also see Ronan Keating's '71 911, silver and freshly repainted, occasionally when he is getting it valeted, never seen him drive it though. It was actually full of filler when they stripped the paint off it, it was done by the chap who did my Coupe, but now if it repaired correctly and is a really lovely car now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 111 ✭✭Borgman100

Thanks for the comments Mercmad, and Galwaytt

You are both right, to be honest the car owes me nothing now, just the cost of running it. I love it but just feel a bit guilty for not using it enough (company car)

Having had a think over the weekend, and also a little spin (started first time having been standing for a month) my New year resolution is to clean it up and use it more...better late than never!

Just one more question...can anyone recommend classic car clubs in Ireland that i can look to join?

Hope to see you around Dublin,

    Borgman100

    Hey Borgman,
Glad to hear that you are keeping the 912, you'd regret selling that.
I used be, in fact still am, in the Italian Classic Car Club (founding member!) but not really a member of any other club. I have an old 124 spider but don't get out in it much. I was the proud owner of a Fiat Dino coupe (2.0 Very yellow) in the past but it has long since gone.
No offence to the Porsche owners club but it's not really my thing, but maybe you might want to get in touch with them?
The next time there's a run on from here or over on the Octane group I'll let you know. The runs have all sorts of classics on it so there's no exclusivity on them - much better fun!

totally agree with CFD, the Porsche Club might not be totally suited for what you are intending, mostly fairly modern cars there...

Have a look at the classic car club section here http://www.classiccarsireland.eu/car_clubs.asp to see if anything catches your attention. I heard very good stories about the Blessington Club, very active, lots of different cars...

Your car is such a beaut that you will regret selling it in a few years time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 111 ✭✭Borgman100

Cheers Kermit...you are right. I cut my classic car teeth on vw beetles and split screen vans, and always wanted a 912, the looks, but with the easy to run flat 4 aircooled engine. TBH if it went I would regret it, and then it would be too late!

    Cheers again!
