Eine Frau in Berlin (aka A Woman in Berlin)

German film about the rape of women by Soviet soldiers in post-war Berlin. Rather than giving a longer synopsis, I'll link back to Tony EH's post in this thread from earlier this year.

It's a good film about a very important subject which for a long time was taboo in Germany (and probably still is to a certain extent). I didn't like the beginning of the film (boring action scenes that don't belong) and the directing style irked me in places, but it has a good ending which reflects the complexity and moral ambiguity of what must have occurred in many instances.

I would definitely recommend it, especially for anyone unfamiliar with this period of history. The aftermath of WWII is for me far more interesting than the war itself. I'd like to see more films like this that show the result of war.

Finally got around to watching The Iron Giant fully after hearing so much recommendations for it.

I was suprised how mature and smart the story was handled. Simplistic storyline (boy meets new friend, nobody understands it and are afraid) but it was done so enjoyably.

I was expecting the story to get schmaltzy at one point but it never needed to push out what you were supposed to be feeling for a robot and his kid friend. It doesn't make the military out to be evil cùnts, just that one guy who worked for them was an utter wanker.

Plus when the military unleash hell and the robot fights back is pretty cool :pac:

A damn fine animation which is done intelligently and doesn't dumb itself down is really rare these days. I understood it performed shìte in the US box office but did good in the rest of the world. I think the head of Warner Bros. stated how people complained to them about not making enough "smart" kids movies but he came back with how they get critically savaged and do poor in the box office for not being understood at the time.

^ 100% agree Duggy, Iron Giant is a fantastic and intelligent film, lots of emotion to it, one of the better animations i've seen.

not enough talking animals with celebrity voices.

This is something about movies that baffles me, people complain that they're just churning out the same old ****e over and over again (really Dreamworks? TWO movies about evil super geniuses in as many months?) yet the ones that dont follow the same old formula do poorly at the box office. look at How to Train Your Dragon, aside from TS3 hands down the best animated movie of the year, now it didnt do poorly but its one of those films that a lot of people havent even heard of, yet Shrek 4 has people going in their droves even though its the same soulless sh1t as the previous three

Family as metaphor for Orwellian government.

A pretentious bore, with a droll ending.

    The Mirror

The difference between pretentious and genuine.

    Heartfelt, hypnotic, poetic.

The Thing on Blu-Ray last night.

I've seen the film a good few times, but haven't watched it in the last few years. The Blu-Ray transfer is absolutely fantastic. The film itself is in my top 5 films. It's a masterpiece of filmmaking and possibly Carpenters greatest film.

It's nearly 30 years old but still stands up to this day.

For me, it's this scene which makes the film. Naturally, spoilers if you haven't seen it.

Got this recently as well and its also one of my favourites of all time. Contrary to a lot of reviews I think the transfere is excellent and infinitely better than the DVD.

Finally got to see Inception. Missed it at the cinema, so got it on Blu ray last Tuesday and only popped it in to watch tonight.

It ended about 15 minutes ago, and what a great film. So much to love about it, and the way the film ends is excellent.

To anyone out there who has not seen it, get to watch it asap. Watch it in one sitting and enjoy.

I watched memento last night after reading lots of good reviews. So i was looking forward to it and had high expectations. I thought it was ok but was quite disappointed, its over rated and slightly boring with nothing much going on.

    Despicable Me..

Best animated movie of the year after 'Toy Story 3'.. with 'How To Train Your Dragon' not far behind it.

    'Despicable' had more LOL moments.

Really? I thought it was awful aside from the minions, those guys made the movie.

The minions were the show-stealers without doubt!

But some of the lines from the kids (particularly Agnes) were great.

Vector was the damn squib of the film.. don't think I laughed once at one of his lines.

Watched "journey of the childmen" a documentary covering the mighty boosh tour of Britain and Ireland a few years back. Pretentious, miserable, pseudo psycadelic, humourless, lifeless tripe. Showed the boosh team at their most miserable and generally bored stiff trying to entertain themselves off stage. Unless something dramatic occured in the final quarter, that i missed (couldn't last that long) i would avoid...
(i think this doc was independend from the boosh team, made by some up his own hole film maker)

Collapse - a very interesting documentary interviewing a guy called Michael Ruppert who has quite an apocalyptic vision of the future. He claims to have predicted the current financial crises five years ago.

He talks about everything from peak oil to the inevitable break down in society as we know it(according to him). It's well worth a look, no matter what your opinion of his views. Be warned though, it's a very bleak and depressing look at the past present and future.

    O Brother Where Art Thou?

an absolute classic, infinitely watchable, hilariously funny in places "we're in a tight spot!" and a brilliant soundtrack. My fave Coens movie by far.

Iron Man II - sh**te ... didn't like the 1st either but watched this since i had rented the 2 ...

Not that i dont like action hero films, but needs a stylish director like Nolan
    to make 'em good.

The Pursuit of Happyness - amazing film ! - and i normally don't like Will Smith - well this is his best work.

Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, was in a Bond mood, QoS is infinitely better when you watch it directly after CR, I love how it picks up minutes after it, the first proper Bond sequel I think. Its also a lot better than I remember it being, the opening chase scenes and the opera are great.

I thought The Mist was a very good film but can understand it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

The Mist was great until it was overpowered by poor CGI, other than that I liked it. The concept was awesome though so the movie really could have been epic!

The cgi is only poor in the colour version though, the b&w one is fine, suits the movie much better

    Donnie Darko (2001)
I watched this again the other night. Stylish nonsense with a very well chosen nostalgic soundtrack...I liked it! Solid acting from the leads and enough quirkyness to make me keep watching till the end. There's a slight vibe of Twin Peaks about it and it really looks like it was shot on the set of John Carpenter's "Halloween".

However the awful trailer makes it look like a bad horror film...

The Director's Cut was an awful piece with a dreadful soundtrack which allowed the director Richard Kelly more control..................it then showed us how much of a hack he really was and how studio interference can, in this case, rarely be a good thing.
