Did you watch the deleted scene with Matt Smith? Awesome but I can see why it didn't make the final cut, no pun intended.

Hehe, yeah. I'm glad it was cut though. It was a bit too ridiculous and wouldn't have suited the tone of the film.

Barton Fink - second time watching it with a good few years gap in between. It's pretty fantastic, certainly up there among the Coen's crowning achievements. It's their most thought provoking film anyway. The themes of creativity, writer's block, the savage 'phoniness' of Hollywood and the powers of art ("the common man!") are probably the most complex they've tackled, maybe a Serious Man excepted. But they've crafted a terrifically entertaining film around the symbolism and thematic ruminations. It's very funny - the meetings with Lipnick are priceless - and pretty disturbing in it's surreal second half. Comparisons with the Shining are fair, but this is a unique beast too. Tutturo and Goodman are superb, as are the supporting players. It's one of the Coen's more cynical films, but easily amongst their four or five best IMO.

    Souse!

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) - Contender for the worst film I've ever seen (along wit The Skydivers). Not because of the stupid concept but dodgy acting from those with American accents and the inevitable moment of
    nom nom poop
once the good doctor made his pitch makes for a lousy film.

I think if you're going to partly credit the likes of Joseph Mengele as an inspiration for a character it would probably help to give the plot some depth so you don't look like a loon.
When I was finished with "The Human Centipede" I wasn't impressed, I wasn't entertained and honestly I wasn't even offended, because deep down it's just more torture porn with an artistic gloss on its surface that will convince many horror buffs in to believing they're watching pure art and are actually just indulging in more human suffering for the purposes of entertainment.

Pretty much. Plus at one point, Heiter looked just like

    Secretlab.png

    The Namesake -
Really enjoyed it apart from one section which I think was out of character for Gogol.
Moushumi is as dislikeable older than when she was first met so I don't believe Gogol's interest in her. Enough to commit to her anyway based on what we know of him.
I guess the novel from which the movie was adapted goes more in depth.

DVD case says "comedy-drama". Liar. Just a drama. Good film anyway.

The Pod People (MST3K version) - Mostly a rip off of ET with a dodgy dubbed child actor and Trumpy the fantastically named alien. Made better with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 commentary. "Hey, he's got Bette Davis eyes!"

So watch The Namesake, avoid The Human Centipede, your mileage with MST3k may vary. :pac:

    The Purple Rose Of Cairo.
Highly enjoyable fare from Woody Allen, perfectly cast and pitched although the ending is a bit flimsy.

The Hunt for Red October (1990), RTE 2, a pretty shoddy treatment by Arteeee - a miserable 4:3 ratio print that appears to have been knocking round the vault for a while.
Still enjoyable though the optical effects have definitely aged quite badly.

I watched Hunt For Red October about 2 months ago and got sucked in again.

    Love it.

Ah saw that on VHS about 15/20 years ago, was shocked that my local store had it stocked but they also had things like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders so I shouldn't have been too surprised.

Kick-Ass:Essentially Quentin Tarantino remaking the 1960's Batman. A hyperviolent cartoon that was like a non-crap Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

    The Cat Returns

One of Studio Ghibli's lighter efforts, in which a girl called Haru saves the life of a cat and is "rewarded" by being forced to marry the Cat Prince. There are some beautiful moments, and the animation is as good as anything produced by Ghibli, but the plot (girl is taken to a fantastical land and learns something about herself) and themes (mostly, be self-confident) have been done before, and no new ground is broken. I watched the English version, which had some great casting choices for the cats, including Tim Curry as the nasty Cat King, Rene Auberjonois as his servant and Cary Elwes as the heroic not-actually-a-cat Baron Humbert Von Jikkingen, though Anne Hathaway as Haru is less strong. This is best watched with small children or cat-obsessed girlfriends.

Always disliked the Cat Returns, the semi-prequel - features the Baron character - Whisper of the Art is pleasant viewing though. Oh, and always watch subbed ;) The Ghibli film Only Yesterday is one Channel 4 late tonight or tomorrow actually: only one I haven't seen in its entirety, only the second half for some reason!

Star Trek (2009): Was looking for something light and entertaining to watch last night and in the absence of anything else rewatched the Blu-Ray of this. Astonishingly good film, without a doubt the best non-Christopher Nolan blockbuster in the longest time. It has a sense of character and urgency sorely missing from most contemporary Hollywood cinema. It's full of humour, warmth and well judged set pieces. Also, kudos to Abrams and co. for managing to find a narrative justification for a 'reboot'. Obviously there are some plotholes (as is always the way
    with time travel
) and its lens-flair-riffic, but Abrams proves himself again as one of the most vital voices in big budget cinema. It's a true shame there aren't as many action / sci-fi blockbusters so colourful and energetic, and it's the best film of its type in some time. Hopefully Super 8 will be a worthy successor, and I look forward to any sequel.

Caught the 1944 version of Jane Eyre with Orson Wells. They messed with the ending a bit but somehow managed to capture the essence of the book in a relatively short film. It will be interesting to see how the new version with Michael Fassbinder and Mia Wasikowska measures up.
