My Vincent Price marathon continues. :) I watched the Pit and the Pendulum this morning. I think this is widely regarded as one of his most magnificent performances.

I loved the use of colour when
Francis was going in and out of consciousness and fight scenes between Nicholas Medina (Price) and the doctor

    The Guard

You just can't beat great dialogue mixed with a semi-farce.
Gleeson was superb, pity it's a comedy so there'll be no award nods.
Mark Strong, Don Cheadle & Fionnuala Flanagan we're in top form too.
    Loved it.
    8.5/10

Wrecked staring Adrian Brody, think he’s a fine actor but that film was a borefest.

The Guard was awesome!! Best line
"Sure I'm Irish, racism is part of my culture
    Gleeson was amazing.

As for Wrecked, it's rubbish. Possibly the worst film I've seen this year, and I've seen some terrible movies.

Bridesmaids: Found it petty funny in parts, but it also seemed quite slow and a bit over long too. Above average but nothing more. Kirsten Wiig is very good in it though.

Watched a movie recently called 'Ironclad'. It concerns the siege at Rochester Castle and is pretty accurate historically. The end is tarted up a bit in true Hollywood fashion but all in all a decent effort.

    The Sunshine Limited

Glad I watched it but I fear quite a lot of it went over my head. This could be because I may have fallen asleep. I'm not 100% sure. I just remember all of a sudden Tommy Lee Jones had a drink in his hand that I don't where it came from.

I'm not going to rate it. But I enjoyed it.

Loved The Guard also. My funniest moment was
when Sheehy (Liam Cunningham) looked like he was giving up at the gun fight then just says ''me hole'' and kept shooting :D

    Bad Company

It was grand, stars Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins ( a pairing I never expected to see!). Harmless brainless action with Chris Rock ranting for comedic effect. A "watch once only" affair.

    Jackass 3.5

    Some wildboys/Jackass 3D out-takes.

    Big fat meh.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

Fantastic, for me the film of the year so far.

    Half Baked

Written by and starring Dave Chappelle. It's a weed comedy which is a genre that I'm not really in to because I don't smoke, nor have I ever really smoked. I'm sure for people that do it would be much better.
I liked all the star cameos.

    5/10

That's got a slightly undeserved rep as a good movie I find. Some of my mates used to swear by it, it's very hit and miss I thought, althogh there are some very funny bits.

Mind Game - odd. I should admit a slight bias against Studio 4oC because I'm not fond of their art and character designs - an odd mix of Japanese and Western style but not as effective as either. This, in fairness, does have enough impressive stylistic flair to get past that. Madcap, hallucinagenic visuals are certainly unique, engaging and constantly varying. Storytelling I'm not so sure about. It's told in a fascinating way (various alternate timelines afoot) but the bulk of narrative progression is in the first and last ten minutes in breakneck montages. The result is a distinctive vision, but on that is potentially less clever then it thinks it is. Avant-garde screwball comedy is one way to put it.

Certainly worth a watch, but the pacing is all over the place, and the fact that almost half the film is set in the belly of a whale minus 'traditional' plot advancement kind of bothered me. Still, admirably different despite its flaws.

    The Man from Nowhere

A South Korean action film that is both brutal & touching in equal measures. Similar in vein to "I Saw The Devil", but even better. Not for the feint hearted but thoroughly enjoyable. 9/10

    Midnight in Paris

Very much a literary comedy. A light hearted jaunt through Paris seen through the eyes of an American writer who travels back in time to the 1920s to meet up with the likes of Hemingway & Picasso. A clever conceit that kind of wears thin towards the end, but it's still probably Woody Allen's best film in years. 6.5/10

    No Strings Attached.

One of the worst films I've seen ever. Unconvincing acting, poor script & thoroughly predictable. It takes the com out of rom-com. 0/10

    Kill The Irishman

The true story of an Irishman who worked for the Mob in the 70s in America. A robust film that's well acted & tells a good story. I wasn't expecting to like this one, but I really did. 8/10

    Heartless

An English fantasy/ horror film carried really well by it's main protaganist until about 2/3rds of the way through, when it kind of stopped working for me. The demons who run riot throughout London though, strike a rather unnerving chord after seeing the real demons run riot during the London riots. 5/10

    Rushmore

Havent seen it in a few years so was like watching it for the first time, I'd forgotten what a great little film this is, bit of a classic. The cinematic equivalent of a warm blanket, leaves me with a smile everytime.
There was a thread a few weeks ago about the use of music in films and I reckon apart from Once upon a time in the west, theres not a film around that has a finer use of music than Rushmore.

The Machinist - Didn't know what to make of this film, it was an odd one but after sleeping on it I decided I liked it :)
    Definitely worth a watch IMO.

Bale is scary thin in that film isn't he? I've always been amazed at the physical transformation he went through from that to Batman Begins. Very bleak and powerful film. 7 or 8 out of 10 for me.

Yes he is outrageously skinny! I couldn't believe it, after reading up about it I read he wanted to lose more weight but the producers wouldn't let him. How much more weight could he lose, crazy! I would go 8/10 for this one myself.

And when he bulked up for Batman Begins, he put on too much muscle and had to loose 40lbs! Crazy stuff

It's probably an 8 for me as well, but it's been a while since I've seen it so I can't remember my exact reaction to it. No-one can question the man's commitment to his roles.

Tyrannosaur - Impressive directorial debut from Paddy Considine. Definitely channeling a bit of his frequent collaborator Shane Meadows with a strong eye and ear for British working class culture. Basically a study of aggression in a grim urban environment, as illustrated by a number of very different characters. It's held together by a powerhouse performance from Peter Mullan, albeit one that occasionally almost requires subtitles (the thick Yorkshire accents throughout lead to the odd moment of indecipherable yelling). Was a bit distracted by Olivia Colman - her performance is a bit twee, and hard to take seriously given her familiarity from Peep Show. And overall, the film somewhat lacks in subtlety. But the in-your-face approach often works, and while largely 'indie by the numbers' there's some nice stylistic moments (a cool jump cut involving a sledgehammer). Worth a gander.

unreal what that guy did to himself, and dropped a ton of weight again for The Fighter.

Bale's ability to change his physique for movies is unparalleled in Hollywood. The amount of dedication borders insanity. Same with Michael Fassbender in Hunger. So devoted to their jobs.

Joe Cornish writes and directs this British sci-fi comedy action adventure starring Jodie Whittaker, Luke Treadaway and Nick Frost. While being robbed by a gang of thugs outside the South London tower block where she lives, trainee nurse Sam (Whittaker)'s hooded attackers suddenly break off their assault when a meteorite hits a nearby carpark.

    British.... alien invasion movie.
Aliens make a mistake and are no match for a council estate street gang.
.Not as bad as I was expecting.I liked it.
    Worth a watch.

    Death At A Funeral

The British version. It's a light and enjoyable affair. A lesson to all low budget film makers on how to make a good film set primarily in one location.

    6.5/10

    Mean Streets.
Good film, as far as I know the beginning of the De Niro/Scorcese marriage. De Niro and Keitel have excellent chemistry as seen in their other films too. Gritty drama with some excellent performances. Just a little slow paced for my liking which is usually not a problem for me. 7.5/10.

    Ronin.

    Excellent.

Haven't seen it in a long time but it still holds up well. The setting, car chases, action and characters are all very well done.

The Paris setting in particular is amazing. Everything looks really good.

I love the theme of the post Cold War world effect. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, troops and specialists were discharged to reduce the costs of the super sized armies. These cuts were needed as the chance of war was small and thus, highly trained soldiers wandered looking for jobs. It's a very intelligent theme that hasn't been seen in a whole lot of focus until Ronin.
