Letters from Iwo Jima. Magnificent film. One of the best depictions of the war I've seen. Once again Eastwood doesn't disappoint.

Rise of the planet of the apes....possibly the worst film i've ever seen.

The Broken a surprisingly good story but it could have been so much better.

    Enjoyable enough though.

    Just watched Hesher.

It stars Joseph Gordon Levitt, Natalie Portman and Rainn Wison. Rainn Wilson plays a grieving father to Devin Brochu's grieving son, Levitt plays metal head hobo pyromaniac who starts squating in their garage and disrupts their lives.

It's quite funny in places and quite emotional too, Levitt is clearly having tonnes of fun in his role and is responsible for pretty much all of the laughs in the movie, it's definitley more a drama than a comedy though. Piper Laurie is good as the grandmother too, Natalie Portman isn't given very much to do though.

    Worth a look.

Stone - Robert De Niro, Edward Norton

Good actors - Bad film. I gave up on this one after giving it as much of a chance as I could - the characterisation, the writing, the dialogue, the atmosphere, the plot - it all seemed at odds with itself if you know what I mean - there was a lack of cohesion / direction / something to guide the film in the right way - there was something big missing and because it didn't look like it was going to turn up any time soon I pressed 'stop' after half-an-hour and counted my losses.

Suicide Club - Finally, someone had the good sense to release this on DVD. Fascinating if messy film. The opening is one of the goriest, most shocking sequences you're likely to see. It then goes on to be an oddly structured film about police trying to track down the cause of a spate of mass suicides. There's a lot of surreal tangents and ambiguous subplots. Don't come expect easy resolutions.

Directed by Sion Sono (Love Exposure, Cold Fish) it's definitely all over the place: annoyingly so at times. But the content usually makes up for it. Blackly comic, it's a fairly savage satire of Japanese pop culture, and the way the public consume it without question. It may be too gory for some, but there's lots of great ideas, albeit ones not always implemented coherently. Sono's provocative style sees it through (some superb cinematography, plus a very accurate take on modern Tokyo), even if it's not as tightly honed as his later films (and they're not particularly tightly honed).

Tree of Life - should be called Tree of shíte .

Sean Penn laughing his arse off - easiest work he ever did, all he had to do was wander about a financial complex and take the lift a few times, then a brisk stroll on the beach - $2m.... chi ching...

    Das Boot (Director's Cut)

Bought it a while ago, just hadn't managed to get 3hours 20mins free to watch it. But i managed on sunday morning after the match. Fantastic movie. i didnt even notice the time going, great atmosphere, good acting, some dodgy miniature effects. Great stuff :)

I couldnt watch it dubbed in english though, i had to switch it to german and put on the subtitles.

Lars and the Real Girl and In the Loop

    Really enjoyed both tbh

Saw Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy and The Warrior.

Found TKSP a bit long and drawn out but it's pretty decent. The Warrior was absolutely brilliant. The acting was superb, and fight scenes were excellently done. (Just to not I'm not even a massive UFC fan)

Have it myself, a really good movie that captures the horribly claustrophobic atmosphere of the submarine - especially when being depth charged. I always watch in German myself as it adds to the whole thing.

I recommended the mockumentary Drop Dead Gorgeous on the TV thread because I saw it years ago and remembered it fondly. I started watching it again because I wasn't sure if it would age well ... did it? Short answer: hell yes! It's black humour, mixing some broad stereotype humour with some surprisingly subtle satire on commercialism and small town life. The cast are all good, but Kirsten Dunst is the best thing about it: her character is obviously very smart, but slightly warped by her upbringing. The Metacritic results show it's one of those films that critics just don't get (28%), but viewers do (8.4/10).

I mean, how many films can find humour in a lady losing a hand? It's in the way she loses it:
it's amputated after surgeons are unable to safely remove the beer can welded to it ...

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

    The Tree of Life.

Absolutely fantastic, if you enjoyed the action and the fast pace of Fast and Furious 5, then you'll enjoy this. Or not.

    From IMDB:
The impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.

    Highly recommend this film.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008 remake)

This film seems to have gotten lukewarm reviews on its release, probably because it dared to touch the 1952 classic original.

But it's a perfectly entertaining piece of sci-fi, with good, solid special effects, some cool, memorable scenes (the owning of the CIA polygraph guy is one), and an alien performance by Keanu Reeves that's up there with the best of them.

Oh and GORT is just as terrifying, if not more so.

Verdict: at least as good as the original, and actually better in some ways.

Transformers - Dark of the Moon

I know. I know. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt with the whole "It's not as woeful as ROTF honest!" line.

My God, there are no words for how **** this movie was.

lol what? Extracting the urine, obviously.. :D

I watched the lovely bones on telly tonight, made no sense what so ever.

    A sick and deranged killer
has the ability to kill kids and send them to their own personal heaven, where they all meet up and dance through the meadows.. Supa lame..

And the last few minutes were sloppy, hes able to rush out of his house with some clothes and lift a very heavy safe (with a corpse inside) up a flight of stairs, through his house and into his garage and into the back of his car... on his own, yet when he gets to the dump site, he has to have help moving the thing a couple of feet..
    ..Supa lame..

Kill The Irishman. It was decent overall but a good chunk of it came across as silly and forced (all the Irish symbolism, the necklace at the end) while the acting generally wasn't the best. Also, I now despise Uilleann Pipes. Had a good time recognising all the Goodfellas and Sopranos guys though.
