Watched Top Secret! again tonight, what an under-rated classic!

If you loved the old-school spoofs like Airplane!, Police Squad, Naked Gun, Hot Shots then you'll absolutely love this gem. Has probably some of the best sight gags ever. It's also Val Kilmer's 1st movie :pac: It really is a shame so many people don't know of this movie despite having seen all the other spoofs.

*sigh* We'll never return to that age of comedy.

Just finished watching Un Prophete. Absolutely incredible i. I thought The Shawshank Redemption would never be beat as the ultimate prison movie. It's been well and truly beaten now. 10/10, instantly one of my all time favourites.

500 Days of Summer- a good film, but spoiled somewhat by a lame ending
    Brooklyn's Finest - Great Film
Surrender - a tired theme that has been done much more convincingly in the past

Burn After Reading- Massive fan of the Coen brothers and i like the film for what it is. They aern't trying to reinvent film making here. Its just a decent story and good dialogue. Not a classic but worth a watch. As the head C.I.A guy basically says at the end, nothing really happened, and we didn't really learn anything here, just to not do it again. And i think Frances Mc Dormand is simply amazing.

The Day Of The Jackal(1973)- Very good old school thriller. I liked the absence of back round music. I really think it added to the tension. Good film just don't confuse it with the more recent remake of a slightly different name if my memory serves me correctly.

Love that flick. However, there is one incredibly dumb part involving the Jackal and the rich lady that had me laughing my head off.
The part where he kills her and there's no struggle whatsoever. It's ridiculous.

Hunger watched that again as well as Adam and Paul seen as they both were voted greatest Irish films recently. Hunger isn't a easy watch but its a classic and Adam and Paul is far better then the over rated Garage

    'Mark of the Devil'

Film about a witchfinder who comes to a town to hunt down, execute and kill the witches of the area. Stars Herbert Lom, Udo Kier and Reggie Nalder (who played the vampire in 'Salem's Lot'. Beautifully shot in Austria and features some graphic (for the time) scenes of torture. Other than that, there's not much to recommend it. Fans of 'The Witchfinder General' may wish to seek it out, as it was heavilly influenced by Reeves's 1968 classic.

For years, hailed as a horrific film due to it's torture scenes, but the most horrific thing about it is it's dubbing.

One flew over the cuckoo's nest - First time watching it, can't believe I never seen it before. What a film, superb performances from the cast, and Nicholson at his finest for sure. I totally wanted
McMurphy to strangle that b*tch Ratched to death
    and I was crestfallen
when I saw McMurphy had received a frontal lobotomy over it and the Chieft killed him - talk about a bittersweet ending
    .

Overall, I'd actually like to read the book now I saw the movie, and it's definitely one of my top 10 movies I've ever seen.

See i wasn't sure about that and i probably should have rewinded it to be certain, when
They are in the bed together and its just before the scene ends, does he actually kill her then on camera?

I think someone came in and interrupted my fine watching of this film so i wasn't sure what had happened untill
The maid started knocking on the door and she wasn't responding, then i knew

Changeling- Although i love Clint, i'm not the biggest fan of Angelina Jolie. So it took me a while to get around to it, but i'm glad i did. It took me a while to believe in Jolie in the character as it certainly is a step in a different direction from other roles i've her play. One other thing is that, for a film that has a great dependence on child acting, i really didn't think them kids were up to much, well most of them anyway. I wasn't really fond of the music in the film, i thought they could have given it a rest at times but hey. All in all, well worth a watch.

Just watched the first two films in the Pirates Of The Caribbean series...

What fun!!! Stupid and idiotic, but absolutely the most enjoyable films I've watched in a long time! Harmless fun and some surprisingly great actors providing supporting roles.

Can't wait to watch the third one now!!!:D

    Do yourself a favour... don't!

I loved the first two - but didn't enjoy the third at all.

Confusing, convoluted and very tiresome unfortunately!

Ah ya gotta finish the story......just lower those expectations buddy! I've still only ever seen the 3rd one once....might give it another go at some point. I love Pirates 1 & 2; really excellent fun movies.

Ok it's been a while since I've posted in here so just going to list off whatever i remember really.

Knowing - Just watched it. 1st half was intriguing but I just thought it fell apart by the 2nd half.

The Road - Really enjoyed it.. pretty much no plot but I thought the character development was excellent and Viggo was superb. Might read the book

The Book of Eli - Pretty different to the Road anyway. Still it was alright. Ridiculous twist at the end though

The Truman Show - I love this movie. Could watch it over and over.

Star Trek - Never followed it before but i thought it was really good.. the opening scene is class imo.. really sets up the movie.

Up - Speaking of opening scenes, the one for up was excellent. The imagery was great and so was the music by Michael Giacchino that went with it. Great little Movie

I Love you, Man - I seem to be in the minority with this movie.. i thought it was hilarious but most people i know thought it was average at best.

Shutter Island - Took me a day to figure out if i liked it. It's very good but the score in it is a bit much at times i thought, in particular the scene when they arrive on the island.

Kick-Ass - Best film of the year so far for me. The action in it is top class, it's hilarious and Hit Girl is enough reason to see the movie.. absolutely stole the show

BladeRunner: The Final Cut - First time I've seen it, not sure which is the best version. It's unreal to think it was made 25 years ago or so.. some of the effects and general picture of the future are class. I liked it but i don't rate it as highly as most people do.

Shelter - have to say i went mainly caused' of Julianne Moore :pac: while for if i would recommend it to people i would say only for those into horror genre. is an ok film overall, the pacing is nice but the sci-fi parts in it is abit let down (since they pull in Julianne as the psych doctor in the first place doh!). some plot holes too.

Sunshine (seen it a few times at this stage)

I love it, especially the soundtrack.

You have to like Sci-Fi films though imo

I'll try this again since yesterday the PC crashed before I could hit send...

I prefer the third to the second, personally. Dead Man's Chest felt like Bloom's agent had sat down and demanded his client get to be as funny as Depp or something.

spoof of Chinese epic love stories, Wong Kar Wai produces but it's a lot lighter than his other stuff.

Wasn't whatI was expecting as I thought the film would be played straight but I liked it. Ending felt a bit detached from the rest.

Does anyone know what this scene is:

I don't recall it in the film on my DVD. Was it edited out the region 2 disc or a deleted scene?

Big Man Japan - Comedy about an underappreciated protector that defends Japan from big monster attacks.

The story's mostly told through a camera crew that is documenting "Big Man Japan"'s life. There's a scene in which
the crew gets stopped at the gates of the secret warehouse where BJM goes to transform from his secret identity and they next glimpse him through a window being escorted by two military men.
Which I thought was great but it suddenly
cuts to CGI of BMJ transforming
and later on the crew are
allowed in a different warehouse to witness the change anyway
    making that first reveal superfluous.

I imagine it was to show
the actor and the CGI are the same guy for the audience
but it's obvious in my opinion and detracts from the documentary style the film is shot in. I suppose it could be said that it was edited in later for the programme but it doesn't look like it to me. (Oooh he said 'it' again!)

I would have preferred shakier cameras as if they're handheld for the monster attacks too but seems like that would have made the CGI more difficult to pull off.

When the credits hit it was a big "WHA?! That's the end?" but overall I liked the film and its style. Especially since it's not really a comedy. It's largely a story about a lonely and underappreciated guy.

Same kind of thing I liked about Hancock before it became nonsense about
angels. If the whole thing was an advertiser helping Hancock get his groove back
it would have been a better film for me.

    In a word Gerty, yes.
He leans over, kisses her and she's dead by the end. I've heard of lady killers, but that's ridiculous.

It's handled in a really silly way. Pity, cos the rest of the film is excellent.

    'When A Stranger Calls'

After a very good setup, involving a babysitter and a weirdo phone-caller, this 1979 "horror" (more of a thriller) goes downhill rapidly. It didn't exactly start at the top either. I was wondering how the film was going to be able to last 90 minutes using this limited scenario. It didn't, it changes pace and direction around the 30 minute mark.

Most people will be aware of this film, even though I'd say a lot of people haven't even seen it and Carol Kane has one of those "I've seen her before" faces. It regularly turns up on those awful "100 best moments of blah..." thingys, but really it's just an average, run of the mill thriller. It's OK, just not very memorable in any way. Everybody is on cue with their acting and it features some good actors, like Charles Durning and Colleen Dewhurst. But, it just lacks any real spice.

It's like getting a Chicken Balti...when you ordered a Vindaloo.

    A History of Violence.

I'd seen it before but I picked up it cheap on Blu-ray. Of the two films with Viggo Mortensen and director David Cronenberg I think I prefer Eastern Promises.

    Tennessee - decent indie movie
Three Monkeys - an excellent film. the director did a great job.

    'Shutter Island'

Interesting start, but around the hour mark, this trails off. The punchline is rather obvious and on the whole it's just not as smart as it thinks it is.

It's a harmless way to spend a couple of hours, but it's nothing memorable.

On a side note, I find it extremely difficult to watch anything with Di Caprio in it. I find him one of the most overrated actors working at the moment. He's quite hammy in this at times, or maybe it's the fact that the other actors around him show him up for what he is.

Scorsese still hasn't made a "great" picture since 'Goodfellas'.

Moon - Its hard to watch this film and not be annoyed at its shunning by the oscars. I guess thats not really important. I love this movie. Sam Rockwell puts in a better performance than any other actor than i have seen in quite some while. I watched it when it came out, and bought it again on dvd yesterday. €9.99 in Hmv.

    Just buy it.

Serenity - Myself and a friend were channel hopping when we came across Buffy, which started a conversation about Joss Whedon which got us onto Firefly and then to Serenity which I dug out of my DVD collection.

It's re-watchability is excellent and the humour is still blended fantastically into the action and drama.

Mulholland Drive - My first David Lynch film so i had no idea what was about to hit me. I have blue velvet right(one of his earlier films) and am excited to watch that soon. My main point about this is figuring out if its a pretentious pile of **** or a complex masterpiece.

While i wouldn't call it a masterpiece, i would definitely lean towards the latter. Basically to me, it doesn't matter if Lynch was just being an ass. Even if we see meanings in it that were not Lynch's intentions. Even if he came out and rubbished many a respected Critic's interpretations. There is nothing definitive about movies. There is no mass-reviewed film on amazon that has 100% positive.

Film comes different to each individual and you should patronize or condescend someone for calling your all time favourite a pile of crap. Neither of you are wrong. You're both right to yourself.

Looking back on this post, it reads like a piece of f***.
