i got that too! love the metal tin and all the acutraments that go with it, but the film itself is a bit...meh

Its possibly my favourite film of all time and I've never seen the final cut, only the theatrical cut. €7 is borderline theft!

I've been watching every movie that won a best picture & director oscar from 1927 up to the current time. Just finished watching 'Going My Way' from 1944. The film has a threadbear storyline, but it's pretty watchable for a few musical numbers. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone though.

Ah to be fair.. it's €7 for a 5 disc collector's edition, hardly a "wad of cash".

It'd probably close to a €5 to rent it - seeing as it's the more recently released "The Final Cut" edition.

7 euro?! for 5 disks and a tin I'm out of touch. :(

I'd recommend The Road, and if you like space zombies, Serenity.

Seen them, i thought the road was fantastic!

Can anyone suggest some solid apolytic movies? Please.. :p

    12 Monkeys. You've prob seen it and it's not to everyone's taste but it's a post-apocalyptic number.

Either that or Mad Max. :pac:

Just watched (Guy Ritchie's) Sherlock Holmes:

Didn't care much for it. Got off to a bad start with me by having blatent CGI cobbled street for the company logos attached to the actual set and spent a lot of my time mentally ticking off what was and wasn't computer generated.

Haven't read Conan Doyle's stories yet so no idea how faithful it was but it felt like plot actually started at the one hour mark, and after realising
the faceless man was Moriarty and not Blackwood
I was just waiting for him to do something which never happened.

It was kind of like in Heroes when the threat of
    Sylar
    got completely undermimed right before
the finale by introducing the next villain supposedly more powerful right before the climactic battle with Sylar.
If he's worse then why should I care about this guy? Same with
Blackwood and Moriarty. Moriarty being THE nemesis of Holmes
is one of the things people (like myself) in general just know about Sherlock Holmes without having read it despite me using spoiler tags. ;) Probably the reason why I didn't care about the mystery either, simply waited for Robert Downey Jr to tell me how it was done.
Blackwood wanting to take back America
(that was the point of it all, right?) didn't seem that big a deal.
Certainly didn't believe it had anything to do with magic at all.

Couple of bits I did like though. Namely the
    abattoir sequence
    and the
    second brawl with the Frenchman
. More "meh" than bad but ultimately I'll probably check out the sequel just to see if it works better when Holmes actually meets his match.

I enjoyed these three movies from back in the day. They are not meant to be taken seriously.

    Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry -
The story deals with two would-be NASCAR hopefuls, Larry and Deke who successfully execute a supermarket heist to finance their jump into the big-time auto racing world, extorting $150,000 in cash from the supermarket manager by holding his wife and daughter hostage.
In making their escape, they are confronted by Larry's one-night stand, Mary convinces them to take her along for the ride in their souped-up Chevrolet Impala. After the heist is reported to the Sheriff, Captain Franklin obsessively sets out to capture the trio in a dragnet, only to find his patrol cars woefully inadequate to catch Larry, Mary and Deke after they switch from the Impala to a high-performance 1969 Dodge Charger.
The trio evades several patrol cars, a high-performance police interceptor, and even Captain Franklin himself in a Bell JetRanger helicopter, but finally colliding with a small freight train, in one of the most shocking movie endings of all time.

The Slumber Party Massacre - Trish Devereaux, a eighteen-year-old high school girl, is left at home by her parents and she decides to have a slumber party. She invites her friends: Kimberly, Jackie and Diane. There is friction between the girls and the new girl, Valerie Bates, who is better at basketball than they, so the new girl decides to stay at home (which is conveniently across the street from the host's house). Meanwhile, Russ Thorn, a murderer of five people with a propensity for power tools has escaped and is at large, and eventually makes his way to wreck the party with his bloody business.

Redneck Zombies - When a clan of hillbily dirtfarmers turn a misplaced barrell of chemical waste into a whiskey still, going blind is the least of their worries as the toxic moonshine turns them into REDNECK ZOMBIES! Now they're ready to invite a group of wayward yankees to a down-home feast of southern-fried gore and mayhem that will turn your stomach and tickle your funny bone!

    'Martyrs'

Horrific French film, showing harrowing scenes of brutal behaviour on captives. It's not revealed why the captives are being held until later in the film, but the slowish build to the punchline makes for a better film in my opinion. Have to say though, I struggled a bit with the ending, but was at a loss on how it should have ended myself.

It's not an easy film to watch and I'm not easilly disturbed by movies these days. In fact, I cut my teeth of the worst of the video nasties during the 80's. However, they all seem incredibly tame when stacked up against some of the films being produced today and 'Martyrs' would fit that bill. There's a lot of nonsense flying around about some films since some smartie coined the phrase "torture porn", but much like "video nasty", it's used mainly by people who haven't the first clue. 'Martyrs' is not "torture porn", but it certainly is uncomfortable to watch. I'm not sure I can right call it entertainment, but it was compelling.

    'Robocop'

If you don't know what this is about, then you've been living under a rock.

BTW, I have no idea why the music from 'The Terminator' is used in this trailer.

    'The Book of Eli'

Set a few decades after a devestating war, Denzel Washington portrays a lone man "travelling West" on foot for some unexplained quest (at least til the end of the film. On the way he comes across a town that's run by the meglomaniac Gary Oldman, who's been searching for a book for many years. Washington happens to be carrying that book.

This was a surprsingly entertaing "post-apocalyptic" tale, shot superbly. It looks and feels like a western crossed with the game 'Fallout 3' and it plays really well. Most of the characters are believable in their gritty roles, but Mila Kunis looks like she stepped of of a salon. A problem that most films featuring women suffer from unfortunately. It's 30 years after the big one, but Mila is still able to pluck those eyebrows and slap on the old makeup! Pretty stupid, of course.

Look out for a great cameo from Michael Gambon and Francis de la Tour (AKA Miss Jones from 'Rising Damp').

KickAss - Good movie, but from the reviews it's been getting I was expecting something extra special, which it wasn't.

Kolya, a really brilliant Czech film. I'd compare it to Central Station. So worth a viewing.

Midnight Express: Fantastic film from Alan Parker, really gut wrenching stuff. The main character is put into a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle some hashish and it goes from there. Based on a true story and well worth a look.

State of Play : So, so crime thriller with Russell Crowe and Ben terrible actor Affleck. Personally, I think that if you are looking for meh, this is it.

Hot Tub Time Machine : I suppose if you're looking to switch your brain off for a few hour this one is alright. It has a few laughs, but don't expect anything intelligent, because you won't get it.

Irreversible : This is one of the best/weirdest shot films I have ever seen. The camera work and editing are fantastic and the effects are really well done. It's a master in film making and I'd advise anyone who enjoys film to watch it.
Warning: Not for the faint of heart, has some very, very graphic scenes in it, with a story that turns the stomach at times.

I think they over-exaggerate the story quite a bit.
Never going to Turkey after seeing it though.

Iron Man 2 - Decent but not as well paced as the original. Also I never felt like there were any gripping moments in the film -
nobody was in any real danger

Robin Hood - Fairly dismal, serviceable acting by Crowe but the film is just sooooo boring.

The Crazies - Decent horror apocalyptic flick.

Blood Diamond - Enjoyable well paced movie with decent acting from all involved, particularly Di Caprio.

bad lieutenant - enjoyable, surreal without being inaccessible. First herzog film Ive seen that i enjoyed.

Re Midnight Express, it was written by Oliver Stone remember!

I watched A History of Violence the other night, I'm a fan of Cronenberg but this one came up slightly short of expectations. Terrific performances and handling of the scenes but I was waiting for the additional plot strand/twist that never arrived. Its not often I'll criticise a film for being too strightforward but this one actually was.

Just watched Capitalism: A Love Story - the Michael Moore "documentary" about the recent financial crises. Very disappointed, especially with the faulty or incomplete analysis of what actually happened. There was absolutely no mention of the ratings agencies (S&P, Moody's), his segment on sub-prime mortgages left out the role of mortgage brokers in mis-selling. He also bottled it on Derivatives, determined to get people thinking that they're impossible to understand, when they're not that hard. He could have started with Commoditization, bundling of loans in instruments that are then chopped up and resold to investors who didn't know what was behind them. Even churches got in on that act, and are paying the price today.

Most annoyingly, he missed a sitting duck. He did a good bit on the "Dead Peasant Insurance" that some companies took out on their employees; that same basic model lies behind Credit Default Swaps (CDS), one of those pesky Derivatives: it's insurance that someone else - someone with whom you have no connection - you will default on (fail to repay) a loan. In other words, a CDS is "Dead Loan Insurance": if you take one out, you score when someone else fails to repay a loan. In September 2008 there were so many of those in play - tens of trillions of dollars - that when some loans did default, the claims pulled the rug out from under AIG, who was selling them by the metric ****load.

PS: a big thank you to Channel 4, for showing a film about the failings of Capitalism, then interrupting it for commercial breaks every 15 minutes. I don't know whether they (and their advertisers) were just thoughtless, were trying to be ironic, or did it as a deliberate snub to the liberal luvvies who were looking forward to the film. Whatever the reason - take a bow.

Channel 4 is a commerical station, it wasn't a snub - its the business model!

Well, Duh. My point was that I've never seen it that bad before. Every 15 minutes, approximately. The film ran from 10:15 to 12:50 = 155 minutes on the schedule. Its stated running time is 127 minutes. That makes 28 minutes of commercials, or 7 commercial breaks of 4 minutes each. I know you should "never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity": it just killed the watching experience dead, worse than anything I've seen on C4 before. That's all.

    Prince of Persia.

Really liked it, decent story for these type of movies that would usually have me yawning.

Gemma Arterton was great as usual.

The Hurt Locker - I really liked and it would be something I would dig out and watch again.

Centurion: OK but I wouldn't buy the dvd or anything.

    Robin Hood: Same as Centurion.

Spellbound: You wouldn't think a documentary film about a spelling bee competition would be so interesting! Thought it was excellent.

Dear John: Hands down the worst movie I have ever seen in my life.

  • Registered Users Posts: 875 ✭✭✭Cookie33

Dear John - useless, the story drags on and doesn't really go anywhere

Die Hard - Classic. Brilliant :)
