Bands I love enough to write wanky paragraphs on:

    1. Jimmy Eat World - have been my favourite band for a good 3 or 4 years now. No matter what, I just can't get tired of listening to Clarity. They make a serious effort for their fans (like setting up online streams of in-studio rehearsals for our viewing pleasure; caught them practicing almost all of Clarity last Thursday, it was one of the best moments of my musical life). They're famous for a certain few songs on the last 3 albums but another thing I love about this band is the quality of unreleased material. I listen more to EPs, covers and b-sides than I do to studio albums; there's just so much quality tucked away there. And to top it off they're genuinely nice guys. Infinite <3.

    2. The National - I have fallen head over heels for this band since I first picked up "Boxer" about a year ago. Matt Berninger's distinctive vocals and subtly wry, introspective lyrics are of the kind that wash over you gently initially but then get into your brain and stay there. Everything they've done since and including the Cherry Tree EP has been amazing. They write, on the whole, slow-burner albums that need a bit of effort to get into but reward the listener for it. Ominous, atmospheric low-key songs; edgy, energetic, original rock songs; they pull it off all so well. Seeing them live increased my appreciation of their music even more.

Bands I really really like but I feel like they're not quite up there with 1 and 2 and will some day be erased from this list when I find 3 more wanky-paragraph-worthy bands:

    3. Death Cab for Cutie

    4. Modest Mouse

    5. Sigur Rós

    Like above, according to last.fm:
    1. They Might Be Giants
    2. Regina Spektor
    3. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
    4. Eels
    5. R.E.M.

Oddly enough, I've never written a wanky paragraph about any of the above, but I have done for most of the 10 that come after.
