Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi all I'm interested in starting in photography but I'm fairly clueless. I've been looking around and came across the finepix s1000fd,http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/consumer/digital/digital-cameras/d-slr-long-zoom/finepix-s1000fd-119757/Specs.

My question is is this camera any good? Will it take pictures with quality similar to those on this forum.
The guy n the shop is selling it with a 2gb memory card and a bag for €200, am I being ripped off or should I look else where? The price is what was attracted me to it.

I tried searching the forum but didn't find what I was looking for, any input welcome.

Personally i am a big fan of Fuji. I used to use the 8000fd esclusively and when i said i was changing to a Canon people seemed to be surprised as the assumption was there that i was using a dSLR already.

For an intro into photography they make a fine camera. I would suggest you check out Curry's though, as the last time i looked they were selling the 8000fd for 200euro!

Fuji make very good Bridge Cameras, of which s1000fd is one of them.

IMO that is very good as a first camera. Will it allow you to get photo's like the one's posted here? It will allow you to take some, others will need more specialised set ups.

The beauty of that camera is that it has the manual controls to allow you to develop your Photography & is priced less than most lenses that you would look at for a DSLR. If it turns out you are really not into Photography after all you have not spent a lot. If you do then by the time you find that camera is limiting you, you will have an idea of what will suit you.

The only thing which may be worth considering is a model which shoots RAW instead of just Jpeg.

I am not sure if €200 is a good deal. Check some of the online stores to compare. The Bricks & Mortar Store will have advantages, especially to someone new.

    Thanks for the replies.

Whats the difference between RAW and Jpeg?
Will the editing software come with the camera?

RAW is a direct copy of the data your Sensor records. When shooting JPEG the camera then uses this data & creates a JPEG image from it & then discards the rest of the information. This is fine for some applications but you will have more scope to correct images & do some creative effects if you have the RAW file.

The Camera will come with some software to process the images, but most people tend to move towards other software packages. Some of these are free & others are for sale.

    Fuji bridge cameras are great!!

I've been using a Fuji s6500fd for the last 2 years now and find it excellent! It has really got me into photography.

The only reason I personally wouldn't go for the s1000fd is I prefer the twist-barrel lense on the s6500fd and the s9600fd.

I'd recommend you check out the s9600fd or s6500fd. I hear the s9600fd can't handle very-high shutter speeds as well though (bit noisier), as it's higher resolution but the sensor is physically the same size. You could put up a wanted-ad on adverts.ie, there are quite a few of them going around as a lot of users eventually make the step up to DSLR. You should pick one up for ~ €120. Also they age very well, after 2 years of being lugged about, my s6500 is as new. Oh and the s6500fd shoots RAW (only just discovered!!). Got good rechargable AA batteries and they seem to last forever.

What type of photography are you into? I could gather a few photos taken...

Here's a great shot that TheNorthBank took with a Fuji s9600fd....

Oh i might have to correct my evaluation... it looks like people are selling them for as much and more than i payed for it new on eBay 2 years ago! ....holds the value well!

    s6500fd near €200 and s9600fd near €300 mark.

You can get both on eBay too...
