Alright, figs! If the conditions are dry and cool, I'd give myself an 80% chance of coming in under 3:21. I'd be delighted to pace with you if you're interested. I plan on running at a 3:20:00 finishing pace until the last few miles. Then I'll slow a bit as I get the inevitable calf cramps.

I'm on Facebook (see if you can guess my name) if you want to contact me there.

Just added myself to the sub 4:30 group.

This will be my 3rd marathon in Ireland this year, the first had an extra 50% free and the next will have a through warm up of a swim and cycle first.

Removed myself, have been injured/sick on and off over the last 5 weeks.
Have missed too much training :(
will try dingle half marathon and then set a new goal.

Hi all, this will be my first marathon. Going to put myself down for a time of the 5hour brackets. Would be thrilled if could get it under that. How's all going with their training. My long runs now are at the 13 mile mark - which I think is probably a bit off but trying my best. I did the Clontarf half marathon time 2 hours 30 very slow I know but that was longest had run at that stage and legs were too heavy. So if I ran that at 2 and a half any realy chance of me running the full in under 5hours? :)

With plenty of training yet to come there is always a chance, but I'd say the chances are pretty slim, I'm afraid

I am runnng 4 or 5 times a week building up gradually! Still hevent done anything further than ten 10k! Feet keep blistering but im getting that sorted.

My question is, has anyone tried this CHI Running? Mid strike on your feet! Is that not bad for your bones to land on the middle of your foot as oppose to the ball or heel?

Is this whole CHI Running aimed at runners who plan on running slow or very slow or other?

    Cheers,
    Kev

Hi rovers_runner, there'll be official pacer strategy and guidance published at a later stage, but the sub-4 pacer will likely be aiming to run at around 9:10/mile throughout the marathon, and will have to make up any time lost to water-stations gradually. Thankfully DCM provides water bottles, which means you really don't need to slow down much to take in water. But if you want to take a slightly longer break, just make sure you keep your eye on the pacer, and slowly but gradually make your way back to to them again, to stay on target.

...slowly but gradually make your way back to to them again, to stay on target.

Great advice, Krusty. Unless you're in the final mile or two, make very gradual adjustments to your pace if you need to catch up to a person or a time split. Going way faster than your average goal pace to catch up is a waste of energy.

    Stop being modest!

For those not in the know ITB is currently scheduled as one of teh Official Pacers :)

Eek it was an ITB injury that kept me out of proper running for nearly 4 months and that still keeps me afraid of doing too much training!

Is this fate? A sign that either I am destined to run with IronTractorBoy and aim for sub 4:30 or that I should stay as far as possible away from him and stick with my aim of sub 5?:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 78 ✭✭IronTractorBoy

I do sometimes have to re-read posts on other running sites due to the same initials.

You could just run with the other 4:30 pacer Wally Runs.

RE: the drinks stations, to minimise and disruption to your pace I would run in the middle of the road and get a drink from one of the people at the end. This way you miss the bottleneck at the first few people. You just need to watch out for discarded bottles/cups and other runners.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

Entered there this morning before deadline passes and another €10 is added to the price.
Pretty dear overall but it's the national marathon so I suppose it's worth it.

That - in a nutshell - sums up exactly why pacers are going to be invaluable for anyone who is inexperienced. It's really easy to lose time / rhythm going through water stations and with so many of them the cumulative effect can be significant. Bu doing as ITB suggests you avoid the crowds, get what you need and get out efficiently. And anyone with a few races under thier belt knows that, but novices don't. And it's those little hints and tips - from knowing that around a certain corner is a hill, knowing to take the best possible line through corners (apex to apex not following the road) to managing water stations and all the other stuff. Pacing / pacers isn't just about setting a metronomic pace for the others to run by. It's about giving the group the benefit of your experience to maximise thier chances of running a good time.

well, that could be me F'D for the DCM. Foot was hurting last few runs and went to doc. He sent me to get an x-ray and I have an old stress fracture in my foot thats been aggrevated. Might be back in 3 weeks though, fingers crossed. Any longer and I reckon I have to give it a miss

Main thing is be positive and keep active. I lost a month's training for the DCM last year, but followed the physios advice and was happy enough with my run in the end. I'd say that any targets you might have for a time could be out the window but there's no reason this far out why you can't run it.

In terms of keeping active, lots of people seem to recommend aqua jogging as a way of maintaining your fitness while keeping the pressure off the injured bits. Have never done it but could be worth looking in to...

    Not necessarily.
Last year I missed the entire January due to pneumonia. Obviously I wasn't cross training either (unless you count coughing your lungs out). I was still able to run the Connemara Ultra at the beginning of April.

Have never done it but could be worth looking in to...

absolutely staying positive mate. I was hoping for a sub 3:45 but its doesnt matter now. Just hoping to run it. I will know on the 12th august as Im back out there.

Can anyone tell me if there is a limit on the number of participants in the DCM? I haven't registered yet because I am worried about injuries and the step up in mileage over the next few weeks, but if I leave it another month am I likely to miss out?

There's no limit on numbers, but the price goes up.
