I meandered out tonight and did 6.5 miles in just under 52 mins. Aerobically, I was shocked to find I'm in great nick! I could have gone all night - had been doing gym stuff through summer so cross-training/biking seems to have kept me in good shape. The legs are really the key. I definitely don't have the strength there and that was why I stopped at 6.5m, i.e, just before any soreness! But, 52 mins nonstop is encouraging! I'm enjoying this 'easy' approach of not pushing it but just meandering along thinking about life! Will try 9 miles for my next long run. As it is, I think I'm not going to run more than 3 times/week. One 5 miler, one long run and one eve on the track for some 400m intervals. Hopefully that should help with strength, though I have hills in my other runs too. But to avoid injury I don't think I can do anymore than that. If it works out, it'll be a photofinish!! But if it doesn't, no big deal. But interesting nonetheless.

Did anyone else enter the competition for the free adidas runners that lifestyle and the Dublin marathon organised, I won :D collecting them tonight out in blanch, there's a free foot scan and a QnA with some runner, not sure who and there's 30% off all adidas gear.

Very enjoyable evening with some sound advice too. My runners are too small though :( so have to exchange for a bigger pair.

I didn't learn too much from the night bar Cathrina McKiernan doesn't give her long runs a lash :D
Goody bag was class, my runners look the biz. My only disappointment was the adidas stock, they had no small and very few medium sizes. I would have bought a few tops to avail of the 30%.

But fair play to Jim Aughney and his team, nice night, it looked like alot of people were missing judging by the amount of badges left over.

The stock wasnt so good. They weren't prepared for us at all. They had no shorts available! Crazy when there are loads of runners there.
Equally my runners are a size too small but possibly acceptable. They didnt have the larger size.
Also, after waiting 30 mins there was still no speaker so I took my free sambo and skulked off. Organisers were muttering about laptops not working. I think that delayed the speaker.
Needs better organisation for next year.....still shouldnt complain too much...it was free!

maybe post a sample of your training plan that you have followed for your previous marathons, I'd guess that more miles in the legs would help but can't really say with out know what your doing :)

This is my first time to tackle the Dublin marathon. I am not a fast runner but finished comfortably in all previous marathons. My last 2 marathons were 4.58 with only 10 seconds in difference! Talk about consistant!!I did the 10 mile in Phoenix Pk last week in 1.45. Any advice about how I could go even a little faster this time as i don't want to go over five hours. Been there, done that! Best time was 4.41 in 2005. Can anyone advise, thinking of joining gym! Thanks

Yep, as Shels said, a sample of the sort of training you're doing at the moment would help. Maybe a sample of what you did in training for your previous marathons.

Thanks for quick replies! At moment Im running 3 weekdays for about 5 miles, then have long run at weekend. longest mileage for a while was Phoenix Pk ten miler, then did 13 last Sunday and plan to do 14 this weekend. Then a 16 and 18 before half in Dublin, then hope to do a 20 on 3rd October. Its probably really a 'get me round' schedule which is fine by me, but would just like to shave a few mins off my last time. This is my 7th marathon so I know jut how long it is!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

Do you ever run 2 days in a row during the week? Or would you say run Monday, Wednesday, Friday then one day at the weekend? Running a few days in a row will help improve endurance and fitness and will in turn help you improve your speed over the longer distance. I wouldn't necessarily say you need to up the milage I know a lot of people get by on about 25 miles a week but a few longer runs during the week would help. If you're running the same distance all the time your body adapts to that and it's very hard to improve because you're not pushing yourself. Upping the distance in some of your weekday runs would be a big help IMO.

Usual routine would be Mon, Wed and Thurs but sometimes I miss the Wed or Thurs run so what you say makes a lot of sense. Everytime I do a marathon, my husband tells me not to go back to running 3's and 4's but to do a run of 8-10 miles once a week. Will make an effort to do runs on consecutive days and see how it works out. Thanks for the tips and will keep you posted! Are you a 3 to 4 hour marathoner?? ( Or less!)

Must be nearly a year since I last logged in. Thought I'd kicked the running habit but then 3 weeks ago someone I know said, 'I'm doing the marathon', and that old feeling came back. You know - that Friday feeling? What happens when the old fire-horse hears the bell?

Welcome back geoff. Best of luck with the training and the marathon prep. Keep enjoying your running and everything else will fall into place.

Is there a planned pre race meeting on the Sat or Sun, I'll be supporting some folks with drinks, gels, etc along the course. I'll be happy to support some boardies also, but would like to ensure I get your requirements right. Lets say I'm at the 16M mark, I would need your race number, colour of vest, expected time @ 16M (these details should be on your drinks bottle for example) and I'll make myself visible.

That would be great BB. Wouldn't mind a bottle waiting for me at about that point. I'll have some family support about the 21 mile mark, but a stock up at 16 would be ideal!

It could be worth getting a BAC poster or banner made up for identifying the support point(s) along the route. You see some clubs with them at races to identify meeting points or support locations. Maybe the BAC committee might consider it.

Went to the park this morning for a 16m LSR.Have never done one on a saturday morning there before as i always do the longer ones on Fridays and take off work. The place was like a DCM training session, never saw so many out in my life, lone runners like myself,2's,3's and a couple of big groups-(Irish Fit etc). I found it way easier as you are distracted when you see others and it also spurs you on.Friday morning LSR's starting at 0830 were very lonely and you just keep thinking of how tired you may be feeling so i think i might do this again.(did the 16m with no water or stops just a few jelly babies,in 1h47 and felt fine after so the sub 4 is still possible)--now for 22m next wekend :)

I hope that was a joke!!, I presume you mean sub 3 or I'm seriously deluding myself about a sub 3:30.

I'm with Diggy on this one.
16miles in 1:47 puts you at 18 miles in or around 2hr - thats approx 9miles/hr.
With 8.2 miles left you'd then be gunning for sub 3hr.
Best of luck with that. Some fine running.

Ah, so this is where this thread went to. Got back from New York on Saturday morning, and got my first long run in today, 18 miles at too fast a speed. Getting used to cold and wind again was weird, but better sooner rather than later. I think running in fierce heat and humidity all summer has stood me in decent stead though. I did my 16 last week (from Queens down the East Side of Manhattan to the Brooklyn Bridge and back) at nighttime after a day that had been a bit cooler than normal, and it was an absolute joy. Having felt like death by the end of my long runs for most of the summer, last week and this week have been great, even though they're longer than I've ever ran before.

Today marked my finally catching up with the Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 training schedule as well, which I'm delighted with. Have been behind since losing 2 full weeks to illness in July, which set me back an awful lot. Hit a sweet spot in the training the week before last where I'm starting to feel very strong on the short runs, and have a much better rhythm on the long runs. Great feeling, after all the slogging. I feel a bit battered after today though. Stepping back to 13 next weekend, which is nice.

"Hitting the sweet spot" Isn't that one of the best things about running. Same thing happened when out for a 16 miler at the weekend. Done first 13 between 9:30 and 10 mins per mile (had to stroll past a couple of dogs). Decided to pickup the last 4. Done 9.12, 8:45 8:16 and then 7:58 for the 16th. For a casual runner like myself it's a great feeling. Next, 21 miles on Sunday. Don't think I'll be this chirpy somehow!!
