How come theres 2 qualifying times for Boston? 3 hr 11 and 3hr 21? is one incorrect?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,545 ✭✭✭tunguska

Is anyone else suddenly REALLY looking forward to it after doing the half today?

Yeah Im ridiculously excited about the marathon now. Its all I think about. This is how obsessed Ive become: Was talking to a really good looking girl in the gym the other day but I wasnt even paying attention to her looks or to anything she was saying. The whole time she was talking I was thinking about the best runners to wear for a marathon. Its a sickness, I know, but what the hell, I love this stuff.

    wow!!!!

I'm pretty excited, although not hugely relishing the amount of pain I will be putting my fragile body through...

The slower one is a different age group. More info on the official Boston site here

gona aim for 3 hours 13 mins. Half marathon time was 1 hr 21 mins so think 3 hr 13 min is realistic.

surely if you did 1:21 for the Half you are going for sub 3??? McMillan has you at 2:51!

Mainly because I had absolutely nothing in the tank at the end of the half marathon. Was going for 6 minute miles and was on target 9 miles into it. Somewhere after that i lost 3.5 minutes over 4 miles. Also coz this is only my second marathon and couldnt imagine running a sub 3 hour marathon! last year i did it in 4 hrs 4 mins. The plan is to aim for 7 minute miles and see how it goes on the day!

I'd be in agreement with Christeb on this one, 1:21 half means youre defo on course for a sub 3hr marathon.
I understand what youre saying about being wasted at the end of the half. This time last year I did the half and I was bolloxed at the end of it. So much so that after I was seriously concerned as to how I was gonna run twice that distance 4 weeks later. But I did. My point is, dont worry, just go for it. You'll be so pumped up with adrenaline on the day that before you know it you'll be passing 24 miles gone and you'll wonder how you ever struggled during a half marathon.
Ultimatley it is your decision, but I just think a 3:13 is selling yourself short.

Forget balls on the chopping block, you might as well just hand them over and be done with it after that! :pac:

This Sunday will be my first 20 mile slow run in the Phoeno so will see how that goes and then i can make a judgement on whether to go for sub 3. Will be running roughly 8 minute miles. I think its also a lot to do with my inexperience at running. My first ever run was the Docklands 5 mile fun run last year which i got roped into! So running just a year and 4 months.

Like smmoore79, dont know where to place myself as regards time for marathon. Ran a 1.43 for half in Dingle, although not really happy as carrying a hip-thigh injury into race, those hills really killed me:mad:, glad i was only doing half not full. Injury has cleared up and have had 2 x20 lsrs, both coming in at 2.41 and 2.38. Is there a chance of sub 3.30(b*lls on chopping block, as tunguska subtely puts it:D) or should I be happy with sub 3.45.
Only started running about 6 months, original plan was just to finish, getting greedy now.

I think that the consensus around here would be to go on the slow side and then make a call on picking it up after 18 - 20 miles. Much better feeling to finish strong than to go too hard too early and fall over the line...

Amadeus, I will also using my referee watch for pacing so we will have a few minutes in hand at the end :-)

Did a 15 mile race on Sunday in the heat. According to the official results my average pace was 10:17.6 per mile, not bad as I was aiming for 10:18.

After listening to some advise on boards I will aim for 3 hours 3 mins (7 min miles), though this could blow up badly in my face!!! Secretly Id love to go sub 3 but I could easily end up struggling and finishing in 3 hrs 30 mins!

New to this thread but would like to get some views about the possibility of doing my first marathon this year :
I have completed some short triathlons this year ,a couple of adventure races(gaelforce/achill roar) and the Conn and lately the Wesport half marathon (2 weeks ago) . I am also planning the Galway half on Sat and I hope to complete that in around 1:42/45. I have some basic fitness but the body is shot and very tired.
Problem is I only really decided Sat last to go for Dublin but I haven't gone over 15m at any stage all summer and in the last 3 weeks I have only been out about 6 times including 2 x 8mile and 1x13mile . I will do the half marathon on Sat and then decide on spending €90 on the entry to Dublin , was then going to try and get 18/20m the following week and then taper down from that.
Any advice on whether I should bite the bullet and just go for it or maybe prepare a little better and go fo it next year .

Honest opinion? It's a stupid idea. Why rush into it?

Thanks Amadeus for been straight , you held back on the sugar coating which was good. Probably made me more stubborn though
I think there is a lot of guys who unless looking for sub 3:30 are only getting 15/18miles now.
Might suck it and see til Sunday and await further feedback but I am 51/49 in leaving it for 2010.

The risk is that you might finish, really hate the experience, and never do another one again. You are not prepared. Have a look at this beginner program, and compare the mileage to what you have done recently: Beginner Program

My intention isn't to convince you that you cannot do the marathon (and increase your stubborn streak), but to instead suggest that you should use this opportunity to start training for a marathon next year, and instead of going out there to survive a race, instead go out and run a solid race with a good time.
