Thanks Amadeus for been straight , you held back on the sugar coating which was good. Probably made me more stubborn though
I think there is a lot of guys who unless looking for sub 3:30 are only getting 15/18miles now.
Might suck it and see til Sunday and await further feedback but I am 51/49 in leaving it for 2010.

    You're quite right of course.
Every year there are loads of muppets who ask how to train for the marathon with less than 4 weeks to go, and how good an idea it is to run it woefully under-prepared.

Decided to change my predicted time from sub 3'30 to sub 3'37, which would be a 1 min PB which if I'm being honest I would bite your arm off for.
Can't wait, Decided I'm going to concentrate on pick up runs from now till race day starting today with a 10 miler, first 2 miles at 8'15 pace, then 8'00, then 7'45, 7'30 and 7'15. I'm sick of struggling at the end of a marathon so I'm trying sth different. Any thoughts or other suggested sessions that may help to counteract the drop in pace for the last few miles of race day?

I'm bowing out for Dublin. I didn't do as much training in Sept as I should've have and while I could have recouped that over these final three weeks and I am confident of my fitness, I've been sick all this week with a chest infection and I know I'll be wiped next week so it would be madness to do the marathon. :(

    I'll consider a spring marathon.

I'll definitely be there on the day cheering my OH and any identifiable boardsies on.

appreciate the feedback , still unsure ,will wait til after the half in Galway Sat .
Up to about from May to mid Sept been averaging 35-40k weekly but this was all for tri's and adventure races(also avge 30k on bike). 13-15miles would not bother me too much at moment .
Not too concerned about enjoying it as a I know I would , would also expect a 3:50-4hr (in an ideal world)..which doesn't exist
Concerned on long term damage , been unable to run/walk/cycle for months,Knee damage (i am 108kg!!) and as I am currently constantly tired getting in only 1-2 18m in a short term while not a large jump from where I am its a significant drain on limited resources as is.

I've just checked the Conrad Hotel website - the one that the pace group have a room to shower in after the race and the one I have been glibly suggesting as a good spot for a few post race beers.

Having mooched through the site though it looks a bit posh. I'm not that bothered either way but maybe someone has an alternative?

[edit] I've looked through and they do have a pub

    DUBHCCI_Conrad_Hotel_Dublin_tour_alfie_pub_large.jpg

so maybe it's not as bad as I thought. You can stop panicking now...

Any thoughts or other suggested sessions that may help to counteract the drop in pace for the last few miles of race day?[/quote]

Whats your recovery like after berlin ? A 10 miler like that wont do anything for stamina. Only my opinion.
Try a 20 miler this week with 10 miles at 9 min miles and 10 miles at 8 min a mile. They get me negative splits anyway. If you have to use the loo go before you start............

Just back from my second and last 22m LSR in the park and must say it was tough, but it's done now :)Have been used to running in calm conditions for the last few weeks and a bit of wind takes it out of me.Best of luck to the many doing similar LSR's tomorrow as the weather forecast is not good :
    Tonight
Very windy tonight with rain becoming more widespread. Strong westerly winds will gust 80 to 100 km/h in exposed parts of the north and west. Lowest temperatures of 10 C to 12 C.
    Tomorrow
Very windy tomorrow morning with some severe gusts in the North. Rain will clear Southwards to sunny spells and scattered showers. Strong and gusty west to northwest winds will moderate in the afternoon
Lets hope it improves again for the big day.

No sympathy here. I have to do my LSR (20 miles) tomorrow here in Canada where the forecast is minus 4 and snowing....

Am in training for my first Marathon the DCM, longest run so far has been 15 but plan on doing 20 tomorrow, how long after it would I need to recover for next long run?

Cheers VR, the 10 miler is to get me mentally ready for Tuesday 15-18 when I'll try the same tactic again but with longer reps, the reps shouldn't be too taxing bar the last but I'm hoping that with such a short amount of time before Dublin that it may help my mental approach, it's not really a physical change I'm looking for.

Regarding going toilet before hand I always do, I go once the night before and then probably 2/3 times that morning before leaving the house  but I've made a few changes to the diet the night before and it appeared to work for the half.

Thanks for the input and although the target is 3'36 I might still be trying to keep an eye out for where you are. :D

I'll probably regret saying this, but bring on the windy conditions! Reading Dean Karnazes' book Ultra Marathon Man, which quite honestly is inspirational, I feel I can face anything :D.

LSR tomorrow (22 miles) in advance of DCM.

Can I ask an honest question. Is anyone else getting sick of running? I hate saying that on this thread but it's just drivin me mad now. Was supposed to do 20 miles this mornin and packed it in after 4 miles. Rain and wind were horrible but I just felt brutal anyway and think I may have sickened myself a bit with the running over the last few months. Has anyone else gone through this when training for a marathon? Cheers and sorry if I inadvertantly bum a few people out! :)

Hope this doesn't sound preachy but I'm going for my first run in three weeks since injury. It could be a walk/run but looking forward to just being able to do it. When I was injury free I did have similar feelings to you at some stages but hopefully back on track now and just thankful for that.

Taper from now on in so you're nearly there ;)

Sorry to hear that Diggy78, but maybe try to add some variation to your runing route to keep things interesting, Ive hound that helped me stave off boredom. If you always run in one place then find somewhere ad different as possible, maybe go to mapmyrun and work out a new route.

Do you run with mujsic? if not maybe try it or if you do try changing your music mix or if possibley listen to a radio program.

I run with a friend so even if I do get bored I wouldn't dare stop early (she says the same!).

keep it up, we're almost there! Just over 3 weeks!

    Been there, done that....
With some of my training, (which is'nt too scientific!) I am just on automatic pilot and just clock up miles.
Other times (rarely enough), I feel as though I'm flying and want to chase a P.B.
The worst ones are where you just have to hang in and grind it out, but when you do it you feel so glad you didn't quit.
With the long runs you get a combination of emotions and it is a matter of not letting the negative ones control you, so you need to devise a few tricks to keep you going.
When I feel like quitting I try to think to myself how I'd feel in two hours time, knowing that I could have had my run completed instead of sitting around scratching my ar$e.
You are not going to stop after 4 miles on the 26th are you? Had you kept going, the chances are you would have gradually felt better (assuming you are not injured), and you would have completed your session.Have another go at it tomorrow if you feel up to it.
It will get easier from here on... Good luck with the rest of your training

think of the DCM as your last day of skool, then your on your holliers:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 200 ✭✭Dundalk

I agree that sometimes it gets hard but you just gotta keep plugging away. I was in a similar situation today around 6 miles where i was running up a long hill with the wind in my face. I felt like just stopping and walking up the hill but i kept at it and eventually got to the top, another half a mile or so i turned a corner and and the wind wasn't facing me any more, I got into a rhythm, felt good and done my 20 miles.

I think its more mental then anything

Another good thing to do is what i would do on tired days but know i have to train...use some music, set up a playlist and once it plays a certain song, go on autopilot until the end of the run:D It has worked a treat for me in the 6 months i've been running and i'll be doing the same in the DCM;)

LSR tomorrow (22 miles) in advance of DCM.

I read that book too, the guy is an animal. Still cant understand how he ate a whole pizza, cheesecake and a large coffee on the go as part of a 130 mile run.

Still, the guy inspires me, and leaves me wondering how far I can can go too. But thats another story for 2010.... :D

Lets worry about DCM first. Had to buy a new pair of runners today and need to break them in before the big run, I bought two pairs a while back, and alternated them for training and races, but they are as flat as a pancake now, no bounce in them, can feel it on the spine. Dont think they'll hold out for another 3 weeks. Have an 18M do to on Monday as my last LSR, but not sure if its a good idea in the new kit, despite doing a few miles tomorrow with the Rathfarnham 5K in the middle of it.

I have the perfect warm up routine before the race starts on the day. If we try now, we could get enought practice before the race starts. Think all the major muscle areas get a work out in this one. lol :-) Keep watching it

I wonder how many of us will have this song on their ipod for the tough times in the race
