Thanks for that Tunguska. I went dowm at luchtime and bought the "juicy Orange - High5 Energy Gel". The guy in the shop said that you only need a tiny amount of water with these. Is he correct?

Once the BIG ONE over, what other runs are out there over Nov/Dec?! Would like a few small races from 5km to 10miles.. Wouldnt want to rest on my laurels and become a slob once ive completed the marathon!

gels that are isotonic. No water required with them so theyre stand alone. I bought a box of them and theyre the business, gonna bring a few with me in the marathon. They go down easy aswell, easy on the digestion which is always a bonus.

+1 for the isotonic gels :).

The Aware10k on the 12th Dec is always a good one.

Cheers for that, mights get some guys from the office to do that too. Someone mentioned the bhaa beach run in Nov 09 in Dollymount. Have you ever heard of this? If so, what would the standard of this be like? Wouldnt want to finish last! Maybe im jumping the gun and should do the marathon first before planning any winter races..

Did it last year and hopefully again this year. Its a go one, and you won't finish last.

Took the plunge so I will test the minimalist training theory ,will do 20m Sat and start the run down .
Did Galway half last week in 1:50 and Westport 2 weeks previous in 1:45 . hoping for close to 4hrs.Very tired legs in Galway
On the gels definately the high5 ISOGELs, the others are too thick and can leave cramping and looking for a toilet if your not use to them .
Also consider how/where to carry them and try them in training if you have not done so .

I've decided to give the marathon a go despite Sept being a terrible month for training between one thing and another. I've been out running this week and while it started slow on Sunday I've gotten my pace back so my confidence is up again.

I'm going for 18 mile lsr tomorrow, will treat it as a mock marathon so will watch the pace, drink lots of water and lucozade sport and see how I get on. I plan to get three good runs in next week and then ease off again for the week before the BIG DAY

I've revised my time to 4:29:59 so aiming for a sub 4:30 instead of 4 now. Even a sub 4:30 would be an improvement on last year so I'll be happy with that.

Back from 17.5m in the park in poor conditions.Tried to run it at 4h pace as my other LSR's were all run slowly and managed it with 2h38mins.No way had i another 9 miles in me at that pace though so the sub 4h dream looks in trouble unless the taper works wonders:o Anyway time to ease back now and don't think i will go above 10 again.
    Top 5 LSR's done :
    21.82
    21.82
    19.37
    17.51
    16.9 = 97.42 so not quite 100m

Anyone else feeling sluggish after the 20mile LSR at the weekend? Did 8 last night at 9 minutes/mile which I'm hoping will be my DCM pace and felt very tired after.

Couldnt run at all on Tuesday, tried and failed. So the answer would be yes. :) Have run since, but pace would be slower than previous.

Man feeling exactly the same. Had 20 mile LSR on Saturday and felt pretty ok. Done a couple of pace runs on Tues/Wed 6 and 10 miles. Then done a few 800's at lunchtime yesterday. Arrived back in the office shattered, absolutely useless.

Take it easy today and do 14-16 miles tomorrow. But I'll be taking it easy

I suppose thats the whole idea of the taper. The hard work is over.

I had a 21miler on Monday and felt fresh on my 10miler on Wednesday  The week before was another story. Totally wrecked.

Must be doing something right this week. Tight calves alright but not bad considering.

Very much so, in fact spent this morning on a a physio's table having my old troublesome hamstring seen to.

Looks like I'll be able to run DCM but one 20 mile long run short of what I wanted to get done, and a full 7 days without any running at all.

    Seriously frustrating.....

Quick question,...Does running on grass slow you down compared to road running? And if so, what would my 2 hrs 36 mins grass run have equated to if it had all been on road?

Yes, grass / trails are definitely slower than road for the same perceived effort, I'd say 10-20 secs per mile.

Yes, havent done anything since Sunday. Very tight for the first few days and theres still a small pain in the left glute. Not sure what that is..! Will try for 8 tonight, 6 tomorrow and please God 20 on Sunday.

Yeah you'd be grand with a little bit of water, I mean Ive taken them before with no water and I was fine, just a bit dry in the mouth after. Ideally take them with water though. Theyre giving out water in small bottles at the marathon so there'll be no problem carrying swigging out of your water bottle and taking the gel at the same time. You could do both no problem on the run.

Good stuff Master of Nothing, have myself in at around 3.35 for first marathon. Like that would love to sneak in under the 3.30. Are you goin to run with the 3.30 pacer or go your own way
Well lets just hope that you do:D I figure i will do my own thing this time around and go with the flow, then just see how it goes from there once i can avoid the traffic;)
    Bobby04 wrote: »
I would have thought 3:30 is easily within your grasp with that sort of time in training. A 3:30 marathon evenly paced would see you pass 21.5 miles in approx 2h52mins I believe so you're well ahead of that in training with no taper etc. If anything I think you're selling yourself well short aiming for "just" 3:30.
I'm also running my first marathon, hoping for 3:30, and feel confident after a 20.6 miler in 2:50! Which one of us is being realistic!?
I would never have guessed a time like that could be possible for me! I've been getting good runs in and will taper after my last LSR tomorrow. I'll definitely be over the moon if i got under 3:30:D Still i think we are both realistic in our ideals, both first timers and unsure of how it'll turn out until the finishing line is crossed:) 20.6 in that time is still v good and seeing as you are confident, i'm sure you will get this race down just how you want it!
    Sosa wrote: »
You are looking at closer to 3:15 than 3:30 if you can do 21.5 in 2:45.
    Good luck
If i got close to a 3:15 i dunno what i would do really...even running in the 3:30+ group i was hopeful of a mid-pack finish from this group but breaking the mould and finishing much better than ever believed would be awesome. Thanks for that:)

To not only you three (if you are all running) but everyone in here running the DCM i wish you Good Luck and good times, let the water flow freely into your mouths, the gelpack dissolve and fuel you like a packet full of victory and the roads glide under your feet, like you've all got Hermes' Boots on:D
