Oh, the shoe is on the other foot now!;)

Why do you think I'm going all low key about Amsterdam and not racing Dublin :D

In fairness MCOS cruised around Dublin last year and his performances this year have been outstanding. He's placing well in triathlons and winning bike TT's. 17-18 weeks out is a long way away but I'd be confident he can run faster than a 3:15

I see MCOS is being lazy in his goal setting again... :P

POT and Black spring to mind :p

Ok Mr Marthon expert. I start DM training sept 14 so I've approx 5 weeks to get in shape for it.... Have you got some 5 week Marathon programme for me that I haven't seen? Its not one of my main goals and 3'27 to 3'15 is almost 30 sec per mile so I reckon its ambitious enough without a specific marathon training plan put down no??

Bit early for this but what the hell.
I know how bad I felt at the 22mile mark last year, so am nervous about publicising my OLT so early.......

I have a very ambitious target for Dublin this year actually... Attend the expo, wave off the pacers, congratulate them on a job well done and drink beer...!

I know you don't have much time for marathon specific training and it is very much a B (or even C) goal for you. However you have done stacks (and stacks) of endurance training and your recent performances have been outstanding. So you have both speed and endurance. And FWIW I wouldn't be looking at last years time when setting this years target. You ran a 20 miler at PMP a couple of weeks before DCM last year and were clearly capable of running a faster time on the day (cramping issues aside).

I'm not saying that you should be targeting a sub 3 or a 2:50 or whatever. And I know that a public declaration of an ambitious goal can be a millstone. But I also know how disappointing it is to get to the finish line and know that you could have gone faster. You clearly have the ability to run a very fast marathon time. It won't be this time because of your lack of specific training but 17 - 18 weeks out I wouldn't be too cautious in your targeting either. And I'm sure the likes of HM could advise on combining Tri and marathon training.

We've all got confidence in you. This can be a positive or a negative in that it can be a boost or unneeded pressure. But believe me I've seen you run, I've raced you and I've trained with you and I am 100% confident that you could run a significantly faster marathon than me. You also have the dedication to training that a lot of us (yep, I'm one!) lack. So we want to see you do well and I don't want to see you sell yourself short.

    Sermon over!!

A sermon like that while I'm trying to run the DCM would be very helpful......

p.s. MCOS - Amadeus is right - You've proved so far this year that you're capable of doing anything that you put your mind to. You have the endurance to go out and run an LSR any day of the week....and I've seen you do it on days that you probably shouldn't have so I know you are capable of it!!! You have it in you to out down a sub 3:15 this year and much faster if you really want to!

Cheers for the sermon and vote of confidence --amadeus-- ;). In a way here I agree with you, I could go faster with the correct training, even Mr McMillan agrees. That would be based on a specific plan. I'm starting the specific training Sept 14 so I'll have about 4 decent lsrs done in that space before the marathon. I will get a couple of long runs done over August and plenty of cycling so I'll see what shape I'm in after that. Just a matter of my two 'A' goals to accomplish first so focus is on them for now. It would be interesting alright to get HM's take on combining Tri and Marathon Training?

Just registered, no going back now! I put myself down as sub 5 hours, would love to go for sub 4'30" but just don't think I'd be ready for it. Main aim is to finish!

Time to take it seriously this year, my 4th marathon so going to ensure I get to the line properly prepared this time.
I won't be happy with anything other than a significant improvement bar injury, starting to get fed up of pacing with 4hr runners up to 10m distances and not translating that to the full 26.2.

Speaking of combining tri and marathon training......

I am due to do a HIM on August 23rd, thats 6 weeks before the DCM. Training for this will have hopefully involved some serious time on the bike (3 hrs plus rides) which helps running fitness and some runs of 2hrs plus (probably maxing out at about 15 miles). I will probably be hitting about 20-25 miles running per week coming up to the HIM. If I was to take up the last 6 weeks of the HH novice plan coming into the DCM off the HIM would I be looking for trouble / injuries or would it get me around in one piece? Not looking for a super time, would just like to enjoy the day (McMillan tells me I can do a 3.30hr marathon but I don't think thats feasible). Opinions welcome.....even if it is to tell me I'm stupid / mad / deluded....

I know that feeling. I run the first 20 miles well under 3 hours and the last 10k goes haywire for me, was a bit more even during the Conn Ultra so hopefully with good training I can improve on this.

Jeez. After reading this thread I really want to enter DCM right now, I'm talking this very moment. However I have been burned recently with entering races too far in advance and then coming a cropper through injury and wasting my entry fee. I'm going to wait until the final (well maybe penultimate to be safe) day of registration to enter.

Best of luck to all and if you haven't started your training get the finger out :D
