    :pac:

"Murphy, O'Reilly, Byrne...I warned ye! That'll be a month's detention for ye now. Or....ye can make up some placards and come marching with me on Saturday, I'll buy the cokes and crisps. Good lads, good lads...."

In principle I don't support the idea of free fees. What I do support, however, is the idea that fees should not be the priority when it comes to budget cuts.

Out of interest I went to the last 'free fees' protest which took place about a month ago and I was rather disappointed, but not entirely surprised. When the march ended at Leinster House there were several activists and politicians speaking on a large stage, and their arguments amounted to little more than "We should have free fees... because, erm, we should! Education is a right not a privilege! NO FEES NO FEES NO FEES!", etc. Not one of the speakers made a clear point as to why university education should be free, and those speaking included the likes of Ruairi Quinn, Richard Boyd Barrett and the presidents of various student's unions. Not to mention the fact that the march was hi-jacked by various 'Eire 32' advocates waving their enormous placards.

Needless to say I won't be attending this one.

FEE isn't one of the usual SWP fronts, it has participants from a variety of groups and individuals.

There is going to be some turnout on Saturday if the bus drivers join the unions and the students!

I wonder instead of striking on a Saturday, we all agreed to turn up to work on Saturday without pay (and did this for the near future every week) could the various cutbacks be avoided? Extra productivity for the same cost
