Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

GPS-Which Irish Grid in Map-source??

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me which grid is better to work off? I notice that OSI online maps (smartmaps.ie) use ITM co-ordinates, and also i can set my GPS to either ITM or Irish Grid 1965.

But for some reason in Map-Source, when i click on 'Edit', 'Preferences', and then 'Position' tab, i can only choose Irish Grid 1965.

At the minute i can pick useful ITM co-ordinates off OSI maps, and input them manually into the GPS, but i'd like to be able to do through MapSource.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks

Hi Burly, there's a coordinate converter on the OSi site which will convert your ITM coordinates to ING. The batch converter will allow you to convert multiple coordinates if you have a list.

    Here's the link http://www.osi.ie/calculators/converter_index.asp

The ITM or Irish Transverse Mercator was developed specifically to translate GPS coordinates more accurately for mapping, so that's probably the best to use, but it sounds like some sort of upgrade would be necessary for your Map Source.

Even the latest version of Mapsource doesn't offer ITM for some reason or another, which is weird because it's there on the latest Garmin handheld GPS units.

Anyway, as long as consumer level OSi maps such as the Discovery series continue to use IG then that's probably the best practical option, especially if you're combining the GPS use with paper maps. The small errors introduced when converting between IG (as opposed to ITM) and WGS84 internally in the GPS unit itself isn't going to make any practical difference in most outdoor pursuits type applications. If you're a surveyor or other GIS professional, of course, then it's a different kettle of fish entirely.
