You tried another port? do other device work in the ports?

I had the same problem, I had to get a USB PCI expansion card. I'm guessing the ports lost power from the mother board.

if it doesn't work in any other computer it would appear to be the usb memory stick that is faulty, do other usb devices work when plugged into the usb port?

You could try getting exactly the same type of memory stick, and transplanting the memory chip from bad to good.

Now, unless it's been dropped, stepped on, twisted or left in trouser pocket and thrown in washing machine, then it might be something simple like a dodgy connection between the USB connector and the circuit board, in which case you'd have to open it up, remove the connector fully, and attempt something approaching open-heart surgery. You can't trust these devices. If your data is that important, carry two (different brands) (and/or e-mail them to yourself, and/or use online storage) and leave files on the PC you've just worked on, until you know you've sucessfully transferred them to another computer. You can see that I've learned the hard way...

    Try using these programs

    R- Studio

    Recuva

I was able to recover my files using R-Studio.
