Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking for photos of Dublin

    Hey,

I am in the process of setting up a business and as these are tough times I am doing it on a Lidl-esque (its a word...) budget. For the business I need a website and as it is Dublin based I want to have some cool photos of Dublin.

I'd love to do a range of things such as day and night time shots of the city, The Liffey, The Spire etc...

Anywho, I have pretty much no money to do this with, I have friends working on the web side of it and I am doing the rest. I was hoping that someone would offer photos for me to use on the web for free. I am being honest when I say that I have nothing to offer but the knowledge that your work is up on a website somewhere....

I will understand if you don't want to share but I thought I would give it a go since I have passed so much time in this forum looking through your shots.

I have been trying to get some of them myself on my Canon but they keep turning out crap! :o

Why not post some of the pics you've taken and see if someone can give you some advice on how to improve them? That way you can get exactly the pictures you want :D

What is the website? How will you be promoting it? How many visitors do you expect to have weekly?

If I saw/expected a website to have a lot of visitors I'd more than likely give a few images their way but from the sounds of it, I'm not expecting much. No offence, but you're going about this the wrong way. If you expect something for free, you won't get good service. No offence to your friend, but 99% of the time 'mates' just know a bit more about computers then your regular Joe. Thus think they can pop something special together. I can say this as I'm a webdesigner and have had many many people come to me with a steaming pile of a website looking to fork out more money after a friends blotched job. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Best of luck with your venture though!!

Good on you for being honest anyhow - not sure how much of an uptake you might get... people generally have invested a lot of money on their equipment etc... Then again if people are purely in it for the hobby then they may show some interest.

Perhaps if the website was live it might give peeps something to look at and think "yeah, my work might be ok up there".

Have you thought about a deferred payment approach??? i.e. if you are making money out of the web site in 6 months time, then to be fair to the photographer, you should provide an agreed form of recompense.... It just might be another angle on it where photographers could view it as a bona fide business proposition. And if they had the images in stock then it might suit them to invest their images in your site.... Just a thought.

Some referenced flickr - you will find some photographers on flickr may have images licenced under creative commons form that would allow you to use with attribution or whatever.

Fair play to you again for being honest - it's all too often that we hear from photographers who's work has been pinched and a row would ensue. Whether you get positive responses to your request or not - at least you recognise that you can't just 'lift' the images.

You'll also find images on pix.ie which has more of an Irish feel to it but there's no messaging system like flickr to contact the owner of the images unless you use the comments facility to make an approach - I don't know is that allowed so it would be as well to check in advance with help@pix.ie

I haven't photographed Dublin at all so in any event I wouldn't have suitable material.

OP, I agree with the previous posters, if we had a better view of what the website was, it might make it easier to decide.

Unless you really do run flickr, in which case you probably have a few of mine for free already!

    Thought the same myself,
It might of been a good idea to explain what the OP can use flickr for,He could email some of the users and ask them if they could supply the photos.:pac:

Thanks folks, I will have a look through those websites and take the approach that you suggested. I also got some PM's with offers which I will gladly take up on.

I'd rather keep the nature of the business to myself for now. Thanks again for the advice.

Don't think your helping yourself much really.

Your looking to start a business (i.e make money) and are looking for assistance with this in the form of photos for free. Without any information this could be anything from a photo sale business to porn.

Most people would like to know, at least in vague terms, where there photos are going to. Doubt very many would give them over carte blanche.

Ah no, dont get me wrong, if someone was giving me high def pictures I would assume it would be via email and at that stage I would talk about the business, I just dont want to discuss it on a public forum.

If you go to flickr and come across any images of mine make sure you request permission. That probably goes to anyone on flickr with a © on the end of their photos.

But best of luck with the business anyway ;)

You'll find when your looking for something for free and ,more often than not when paying as well, you need to sell yourself and your product.

Absolutely and thanks for the good will. It should be obvious that my intentions are good since I came on here asking for photos rather than just going out stealing!

What i would say is that you do a search on flickr and find the cool photos you want to shoot. Then take your camera and shoot them yourself - once you have the inspiration you are looking for it shouldn't be that hard to replicate them with your own gear.
