YEP. Compare the Minimum wage in the UK minus tax and NIC versus the same in the ROI.

time to bring this thread back up.

how do our rates v cost of living compare now?

i reckon its about 25% cheaper to live in the UK all things taken in, but our social welfare is about 50% higher on average. i am basing my figures on the fact that i spend about 5 days a month in the UK.

does the uk have the FIS, rent allowance, fuel and the other 60 benifits that we have here?

an other interesting stat, probably the only valid one, is how much do they spend on social payments in 2012 v what we spend and then divide per person.

population of ireland is 4,670,976 and last year, our budget for social payments was 20.5 billion, this figure then is missing money spent towards health care, for those unemployed. it also contains i think, the child benifit, so we need to divide by the entire population to get a full breakdown. that means it costs the state 438euro per person in this country for social welfare alone or are my maths wrong here?

anybody have those figures for the UK?

The UK had working families tax credit and quite generous at that, similar to FIS, rent allowance type schemes and fuel benefits. Not sure about the other types but I believe it was quite extensive.

I know some have been cut in the last few years but so have our schemes. Cuts have been made and more will come over the next couple of budgets. They mightn't be quick enough for some but there are reasons they don't just cut everything in half in one go and some of them make sense!

The dole should be cut. Some of the socialist posters on here are very stupid. Ireland should match the dole to other Eurozone countries.

    can you expand please?

i would like to think, that if i did lose my job, i am prepared for it and could survive, i know what are luxury items and what are not and thus, i know what i can do without.

can anybody clarify what an unmarried man, rental accoadation is entitled to get if he lost his job tomorrow?

    188 a week dole.
    rent allowance?
    medical card
what about heat/electricity or is that only for certain ages

    that would be it then?

That's about it I think, not sure if they automatically qualify for the fuel allowance during the winter.

€30 minimum now has to be paid for rent and there are limits on how much rent they'll pay, depends on the area.

I think up to age 24, its a reduced payment. €100 or so a week.

Maybe the government should charge us to cross the border into northern Ireland, that would stop us trying for cheaper goods in our vrt infested cars.

Or another solution to 'border nippers' could be to....make a Utd Ireland, i.e., 26 counties morphs into 32! :P

Socialism is great...... until you run out of other people's money. The longer you are on the dole the greater it should be cut until its eventually butter vouchers only.

Tyou only pay about £7 for your prescription regardless of what's on it.

That is incorrect, it is £7.20 PER ITEM on the prescription not a one off payment, so if you have 3 items the cost is £21.60. You are exempt from any charges however if you are in receipt of most social welfare packages.

I think my mind is made up, I'll move to Sweden. They have a "Welfare state" that actually works.

If you do go to Sweden, whatever you do make sure you don't become a parent, (assuming you are male!) - might sound a bit random/off topic but I refer to it as I have a friend who moved there, was in a relationship, had children and then sadly the r'ship ended.. the upshot is he now has no access to his kids... (because his ex says horrid (untrue) things about him) .... Father's over there have no rights - for example see here:

"In Sweden, which claims to be progressive and promote Gender Equality, has reports 128,000 women currently hold SOLE custody of their children (mostly against the father's wishes) and 11,000 men hold SOLE custody of their children, a ration of more than 11:1 in favour of women.

Sweden is considered the #1 country in the world for Mothers to live."

When considering moving to another country its wise to consider they have different laws on different things and its not until you encounter such a problem of course till you realize but what I'm saying is its not always about money!

Not that different from here. Surprising considering Sweden was a forerunner in bringing in paternity pay and leave and changing societies attitudes towards it.

ii am not sure but i believe that mobility between eurozone countries has become somewhat more difficult
some are expecting people to speak their language and in Sweden ....well, not that easy nor in Holland
i find German impossible - some very long words - harder for brain injured and/or elderly
