    Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of or dealt with KLG Tarmac & Asphault Specialists? They called round to the house today and offered to do it for us for very cheap and I am a bit weary of it as I heard of a crowd that were going around offering to do it for cheap and asking for cash before the job was done and then not completing it. A previous post in this forum asks the same thing but I was hoping someone has dealt with them since.

    Thanks in advance!

Lots of these are complete cowboys but you actually never know. The best tarmac gang around my area is not a business either but I know who they are and would recommend them to anyone as they do a great job.

What region are these in , have they an address or only a mobile number ??

There is no KLG registered with the companies office if that is any good to ya and no KLG in the phonebook anywhere in Ireland .

My Dad dealt with a similar named company who did exactly what you said, i.e. took cash before the job was finished and never came back to finish it. The sales guy went from nice to threatening when my Dad said he wouldn't pay til they were finished. As he's in his 70's and this guy was intimidating him, he paid up. I would avoid.

KLG (same crowd) were around here today (north Co. Galway), gave myself and 2 neighbours a good price, no money up front, 7 year guarantee, full drains/soakaways.

I'm tempted to go with them but I'm wondering has anyone had any grief with this particular company? No way I'm handing over any money until the job in finished.

Why not prewrite a contract with all your terms and conditions (not paying until after the first rain, tarmac must meet specified standards, or whatever), and leave a gap for them to enter their signature, name, postal address of company and landline phone number.

If the contract is reasonable, and they don't want to sign, just don't do business with them.

And check on here to make sure the vat number is real and relates to the business.

Hello again. Just want to follow up on what happened. We took a risk on them and they did a fantastic job. Didn't ask for money in advance or anything like that. A lot of our neighbours got it done too and no complaints whatsoever. Just in case anyone else got a knock on the door from them and are a bit weary! They did a great job and they're not cowboy's that I can tell from the job they did for us anyway.

monkles: what did they do for you? If they put down tarmac, I take it they dug up the path, and put down some foundations before putting down the tarmac, yes?

We decided not to go with them in the end (salesman was a bit miffed when I rang to cancel), at the end of the day they were only marginally cheaper then a local company anyway (who do have a real address and advertise in the Golden Pages).

A neighbour down the road observed them doing tarmac for someone else (holiday home, owners not there when job being done), he reckoned on the day they did it, they had barely started before lunch and when he came home later, they had finished! The guy is a builder and was surprised how fast they had done the job i.e. he had doubts as regards the amount of tarmac they had put down.

I guess they might do a decent job if you're there to looking over their shoulder while they're putting the tarmac down, but should that really be necessary?

    Oh oh ! .. Classic mistake !

This is a LONG running scam in Tipperary/Cork, basically the job looks great at first .. but all they've done is layed Tarmacadam over the concrete/paving that was there.

In a few weeks it will be destoryed with Weeds and falling apart. If you stick a shovel into it you will be able to peel it off the ground.

A proper job should take a week and a half, i.e. weedkiller, foundation, then tarmacadam over that.

These guys are long gone when you go looking for your money back.

    Another update on KLG...........

My neighbour had booked them too like I had at the weekend, but after I filled him in he decided to cancel them as well. He tried calling them yesterday evening but no answer, he left a message and sent a text.

First thing this morning, a big gang of them pulled up outside his house and were gearing up to start digging when he arrived on the scene (so much for starting on Thursday). A major row ensued as basically they were insisting on going ahead with the job despite no contract having being signed.

The fact my neighbour had a pitchfork in his hand at the time probably deterred them, plus he rang the guards :D.

The guards told him that this bunch are known for their threatening behaviour if things don't go their way and when they get their money, you will never see them again.

They threatened to come back to 'sort out' my neighbour (I guess I got away lightly) so our neighbourhood watch will be on full alert.

So don't touch this crowd with a bargepole, mind you they will probably just change their name to WOM (Westmeath-Offaly-Meath) or something similar (they may formerly heve been known as TMC apparently - Tyrone-Monaghan-Cavan?) and re-print their brochures so be warned.

Sounds like they just put tarmac over what was there beforehand. ie: a thin layer over the much, road, etc, instead of putting in a proper tarmac road.

Sounds like a scam that were covered by the scam-catching program on the BBC.

Well our driveway took about 2 days and it seems fine so far but one of our neighbours who got it done is having problems with it. The weeds are pushing the tarmac up. I reckon ours is only ok because they were putting it on show for everyone else who wanted to get it done. So sorry if I was misleading.

Tarmac is a very easy thing to scam, cos when its done first its going to look grand. But if the ground is not prepared, and the tarmac not laid to an adeqate depth, it just wont last. Drive your car on it a bit and it will get torn up, and weeds will get through.

We discussed getting our driveway done a while ago, so we spoke to lots of people and learned a good bit on how to spot the good from the bad.

also avoid anyone wanting to work in the rain or laying tarmac on a wet or damp base as it will look fine but will start to lift and blister as soon as the sun hits it!
