Company introducing shift work without change of contract or salary increase

I am working for a company and so far our working hours are from 10am - 6pm, as stated in our contract.
Now they are going to introduce shift work because we have too many projects at the same time and not enough space in the office.

It will be divided in 3 shifts.
    7am - 2pm
    3pm - 10pm
    11pm - 6am

Some people have a permanent contract others are only on a temporary contract.
They announced that only the night shift (11pm-6am) will have a 25% raise.

The 7am-2pm and the 3pm to 10pm shift has already started 5 weeks ago. People that are working on these shifts have not received an updated contract nor did they sign anything new, they were just told one day that they have to work these hours. There is also no salary increase for working until 10pm at night.

Many people are now upset at the whole shift work and some say its not even legal the way they just force people to work shift hours without a change in the contract or a salary increase for working until 10pm.

Is a company allowed to introduce shift work like this? No change in contract nor salary increase (for the late shift)?

It's a major change to your employment contract and you will all have to agree to it before it can be implemented. Contact the Labour Relations Commission (www.lrc.ie) if you need help with this.

As far as I know only work after 11pm and before 6am is night work and attracts a premium.

If your shift doesn't change (ie 7-3 one week and 3-10 next week) then working from 3 - 10 is treated the same as 10 - 6.

Usually the contract says something like you may be asked to change hours due to business needs etc.

yes this is a big change in working pattern but the only issue seems to be in the way it was implemented as apposed to how you are remunerated.

Even if this had gone to consultation you would have gotten a longer change over period rather than more money/choice.

Most employment contracts will say something along the lines of 'you may be required to work any 8 hours between the hours of 7am and 11pm' yadda yadda yadda, seems from what the OP says that this could be the same as only the nightshift get the a payrise.
