    its my parents 40th wedding anniversary what is the traditional present for this ocassion..or any general suggestions....

    40th is the Ruby wedding so that would be associated with it.

    Ruby is the traditional 40th wedding present alright. I'm not sure what you could get your parents as a present, usually jewelry is given to spouses. A ruby photo frame with a picture of them in it, maybe on their wedding day might be nice. Or you could throw a party if you wanted or even just a small dinner party with some close family and friends with a red colour theme
