This has been dragging on so long now that you'd have to wonder will it ever happen. If Kenneth Johnson isn't back at the helm then I hope it doesn't.

I thought that initially as the original 2 part mini-series is so much better than The Final Battle, which is enjoyable but loses the great psychological heart of the original story. Then I read his canon book The Second Generation which is such total and utter cack I can't believe the same guy created the series.

Still doesn't change the fact that the original mini series is better than the final battle or full series. I put that down to KJ. Sure this remake will probably suck even with Johnson on board but it has no chance without him imho.

The Warner Bros. produced, ABC-broadcast pilot has, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter, cast Morena Baccarin to play the leader of the Visitors, the alien race who has invaded Earth and rules over the human race. Baccarin's character is "remarkably knowledgeable about human culture and media manipulation."

Looking forward to this. Famke Janssen would've make a great 'Diana' or 'Anna'. (Why?!)

Hmmm.Would be a little scepticle about this but thats because I love the original series.I remember watching it as a tyke and been blown away by it.It was a major family event sitting watching it!Saw it recently enough on Sci Fi and thoroughly enjoyed it.Its pure cheese but terribly enjoyable cheese. It was fun to see 2 of the stars much younger. They both ended up having major parts in HBO's Oz.Cant remember their names in V but they played Omar White and Bob Rebadow in Oz.Plus Diana was super hawt!!!

**SEVERE SPOILER ALERT** the Scott Peters script has been reviewed:

Sounds good, i like the fact he took the P. outta Indepence Day, considering that movie DID rip off V.

I will be very sad if Liz Mitchell goes to this because that definitely means no more Juliet:(

Still V scared the crap out of me as a kid, and who would have thought innocent Willie would end up scaring the crap a whole lot more out of people as Freddie Krueger.

A one hour pilot? That's not much fcukin good is it? Should be a 2 hour episode.
Judging by the link some op posted character develeopment is piss poor in the few hour at least.

Looks like a remake rather than a continuation of the old series... I've been waiting 20 years to see what happened to Elizabeth with the leader on the home planet! :)

Classic TV program although the full series was more like a ropey soap opera near the end.

Oh dear.....I actually liked the original V. I hope they don't mess this up!

The trailer does look good though.

There are two reasons I'm glad you weren't impressed Richard.

    1. I agree, it looks dreadful. I think it looks massively over-stylised with none of the sense of awe that was evident in the original. And that, Party of 5 guy, journalist must be the worst in the world. In almost every interview ever the interviewee doesn't want to be asked questions that portray them negatively.

    2. I was frightened that you were world's most enthusiastic person who loves everything, and that level of enthusiasm frightens me.:D

    The full trailer.

Actually that trailer looks a bit better, the CGI looks alot more refined and polished....but the ships are much smaller. But it's a straight rip of Independence Day...but they in turn did rip off the original V, so karma works both ways.

I think it looks exactly how i'd expect a reboot of V to look like.

As much as I adored the original back in the 80's it's kind of **** when you look at it today.

I disagree SMB, i recently watch the original mini series on Sci-Fi and they still held their own, as in i was able to watch them and still enjoy them. The special effects hold up very well....imo.

The story is more relevent now then when it was first broadcast, i loved how they tied in the holocaust and the rize of the Nazi's into the premise of V, the uniforms, the resistance, the youth movement, propoganda etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,065 ✭✭✭✭Malice

I also loved V as a kid. I vividly remember scenes like the aliens swallowing the white mice and one of the main characters scraping the rubbery human skin off a lizard's face during a fight scene.

Looking at the trailer posted above I have to say I quite like the look of it so far but then maybe I have lower expectations?

Yup, the original series is still an intelligently written and well acted show that stands up to viewing today. Some of the effects look a bit ropey in comparison to modern television, but it is 25 years old. But the story and the way it's told is still great tv, and it's easy to see why it was such an event when it was first broadcast. I have it on dvd and figure it will enjoy an annual dusting off.

You also have to bear in mind that neither the totally dreadful long series or even the fun but dodgy Final Battle are canon.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Final Battle....i think those specials held up very well also, the original two part just ended...and not in a great way, it left open that the resistance would continue to fight but had a no resolution.

Final Battle finished things up, besides...that sequence when Diana was brainwashing Faye Grant was excellent!,

And...without Final Battle how would we have seen the uber scary alien baby sequence???

The Final Battle was made the following year but fairly soon into the production the series creator Ken Johnson walked off as he felt the network was destroying his ideas. The Final Battle was good fun, especially Ham Tyler, and it tied things up nicely, but a lot of the characterisation is dodgy and over wrought. Worst of all it has a stupid deus ex machina ending with Elizabeth's magic world saving glow. Apart from Daniel, the Bernsteins disappear and are never mentioned again, and they were great characters.

I'd love to see how Johnson would have ended the series. He would have had the scary alien baby sequence as Robin was pregnant by the end of the mini-series. And his (not very good) follow up book is littered with half-breeds.

I think that final scene with Daniel freaked me out more than anything else on the show. "You'll be going where you can serve us well...."

BTW, that new trailer looks crap. Still, I can't imagine I'll be turning down the opportunity to watch some 'new' V when it finally arrives.

    In before Lizardfudge.

I'll give it a chance but I'm not expecting much. I loved the original two mini-series as a kid. I remember playing V in the schoolyard with friends and everyone wanted to be Mike Donovan. One episode was on the night before my first communion and I had to go to bed before it. Luckily one of my neighbours taped it for me (they had a video back then, the posh gits).

I watched the original two last year and they still hold up well - tightly plotted and well paced. The tv series proper was appallingly bad though. They killed off Martin in the first episode but brought the same actor back as Martin's brother when fans reacted negatively. Actually I might track the series down and watch it again for laughs. Remember Charles and Diana's wedding?

    But Jane Badler... wow:

I loved Charles and Diana's wedding when I first saw it. How Lydia tried to poison her but Diana smelled her perfume and got Charles to drink from her cup. Then at the end when Lydia came to happily **** Charles, expecting Diana to be dead and she spun his chair around to see his lizardy corpse and Diana had her arrested. I also loved the episode second after that when Lydia was ejected screaming into space besides the corpse. I thought they were both really gruesome and showed Diana as such a kick ass uber-bitch. (I was 11/12)

Imagine my sheer horror to re-watch those episodes 10 years later. They were so embarrassingly corny. Especially the episode between where Martin's brother Philip came to investigate Charles' murder and Diana and Lydia had to fight each other with giant electrified cotton buds to prove their innocence?

The best part of the series was Lane Smith's Governor Bates, which was basically an identical collaborator role to his Mayor Bates in Red Dawn from the year before.:D

Yeah, when I said it was a bit **** looking back on it now I was referring more to the series and not the 2 mini-series which are still very watchable.

Does fighting your nemesis with giant electrified cotton buds in order to prove that you didn't murder your husband/lover sound like the type of plot you would have in an intelligently plotted drama?

Yes we are talking about the series.:D

Just a heads up,the entire series is available in a nice boxset in HMV Greafton St for about 50 quid.
