I am going to do some work in my garage soon. This will involve lifting some rather heavy/awarkward pieces of equipment from ground level to loft level.

What i want to do is set up a pulley to do the work. What I want to use is a rope (of adequete strentght) and a pulley. But what I want hte pulley to have is some sort of brake, so that when I pull the rope and let go the object will stay put and not fall on my head.

Does anyone know of a pulley that can do this and where i could get one?

I know you can get various diffent types of chain pulleys that will do the job, but does anyone know of type like I describe above?
