Im planning on moving from eircoms 3mb package to smarts 4mb package but got a few questions to ask. 1. how long roughly should it take to cancel with eircom and have smart up and running? 2. will my phone be offline during the transistion period? 3. do eircom ask for the netopia router back? how unlimited is smarts package as unlimited broadband doesnt really exist in ireland, thanks

I wouldn't go near Smart if I were you, shocking customer service and totally unreliable.

Why don't you ring smart and they will give you the most up to
date information on all of this?

The reason you should ring them is because some of the advice here would be
from people that have set up their connection with Smart a good while ago
and things have changed a fair bit.

Unlimited = If you download more than 1TB in a month, they will send you a warning.:)
    Edit..
    totally unreliable.

Whatever about customer service, the above is complete bull****.

Smart are one of the most reliable providers in Ireland.

You sure about that? ive heard nothing but good things about them compared with alot of eircom horror stories

I'm with Smart and we're happy with them. It depends on where your located though. The local eircom loop needs to have been unbundled to get access to smart

    +1
Fantastic provider - could teach the others a great deal.

    Same here.
Never heard a bad thing about them.

Been with them more than a year now, not a single issue and
always been able to max out the connection(no contention):).

In fact I have always found their customer service to be quite
helpful in the very few times I needed to contact them.

I was tempted to change to NTL for a while to get the additional
speed but the general opinion from all the threads about NTL is
that its better to have the reliability than additional speed which
you wont use half the time. ;)

I use smart and am very happy with the service.
Smart broadband is unlimited. They don't throttle and there's no contention with other users.

eircom 3mb service with 48 to 1 contention = 62kbps ish at full usage

    Smart 4mb service uncontented = 4mbps

    hhmmm, let me see?

Also, i can run my Blueface number with no problems on my office smart line, but when I try to run it on my eircom home package (no smart where i live) the calls all mysteriously end after 10 seconds.

I'm with Smart almost since the beginning. In that time there has been no problems whatsoever.

As far as I know, you get to keep the Netopia router. At least I did :D

I'm on the 6 Mbps package and get 5.4 Mbps via wireless which isn't bad. They are actually sending 6.9 Mbps down the line!

    Hope this helps :)

What do you mean with a link to Smart ? And why on earth would you ever consider moving back to Eircom ?

Yes you do make it clear, however when pimping your employers product, its good manners to mention your connection in the post, imho.

Most people have it in the sig (Watty, oscarBravo, myself, a few others.), that way, there's no misconception.
