    Irish Air Corps Visit

The Royal Air Force Coningsby Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower completed in 2005; replaced a WWII era Tower. It serves the needs of a very busy RAF station, equipped with the multi-role Typhoon aircraft. There are four Typhoon Squadrons based at RAF Coningsby: 3(F) Sqn, XI Sqn, 17(R) Sqn and 29(R) Sqn and in addition the Harrier GR9, Tornado GR4 of 41(R) Sqn, and aircraft of the world famous Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The Irish Air Traffic Services plan to replace their 50 year-old ATC at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel near Dublin. To make themselves aware of the latest developments in Control Tower design, they requested a visit to view a ‘state of the art’ RAF ATC Tower.

Lt Col Richard Cummins (Chief Air Traffic Services Officer),
Comdt Sean Kearney and Comdt Philip Kiely of the Irish Air Corps visited
RAF Coningsby on Thursday 31 January 2008. They met with ATC personnel and Deputy Commander Royal Engineers involved in the recent design and construction of the ATC Tower. The visitors were taken on a guided tour of the building by Acting Senior Air Traffic Control Officer, Flt Lt Karen Howard and Principal Flight Operations Manager, Flt Sgt Phill Taylor.

The visitors were able to view a 3(F) Sqn Typhoon at close quarters and take lunch in the Officers’ Mess during the day. Before departing the Station they expressed their thanks to Flt Lt Howard and said how extremely helpful ATC staff had been throughout the visit.
