    Not sure how it's spelled? spelt? but where can you get them? and for a bonus point: what are they?

    It is a singular word. A by product of sugar making.

    you can get it in health stores easily, or you can just use treacle which is pretty much the same thing, this is in supermarkets near the sugar or golden syrup (made by the same people), might be in the baking section.

    lots of cheapo brown sugar is white beet sugar with added cane molasses.

    Molasses is a thick black syrup that comes in a jar and you can buy it in Tesco near the baking ingredients, or near the custards/canned fruits/condensed milk section. As rubadub said, you can also get in most decent health food stores.

    I make a nice ginger cake (if I say so myself) I use treacle but have often thought of using molasses, any opinions on that? Good idea/bad idea?

    Got it in Tesco. Was for a brown bread recipe and it was lovely. It looks very like treacle so I'd give it a go!!!
