Hilux transfer help please

Hello all, I have a 93' Hilux import which has been lying up for over 3 years and need to put her back on the road through the DOE. Body perfect and engine (LN 100) 2.8 D sounds and feels like the day I bought it in 97' :). I need two new trac rod ends which I have just ordered and after that it should be ok for test.

My problem is with the transfer box gear stick. It is stuck in 2wd which will be fine for DOE but I need my 4WD. There is some play in the position it is in however even with considerable force it does not want to move. I am trying to understand what would cause this and if there is any simpler move than dropping the whole box? I have tried to reverse to see if I could do anything but so far no joy :( Any pointers really appreciated.

:) With a gentle mallet and a few prayers I managed to get full 4wd back in action. God bless HILUX:)
