HMV Dundrum overpriced rip-off

Was having a look around HMV Dundrum on Saturday - checking out the Blu-Ray discs. I was shocked at the prices they have for those discs... I mentioned to my partner that I was pretty sure Zavvi used to charge way less for the discs.

While browsing through the Blu-ray shelves, we stumbled across Casino Royale Deluxe for 36.99
As we continued browsing the shelves we stumbled across another copy of Casino Royale Deluxe edition for 19.99!!

We asked a staff member to confirm the price of the item - of which he confirmed that it must have been 'old Zavvi stock', and that would explain the different prices on some of the discs. We were lucky that he agreed to sell it to us for 19.99 (a price we were willing to pay) - but we were shocked at how much HMV mark-up their prices!

So, before buying stuff in HMV:
    a) make sure the price displayed is a reasonable price (do research on internet for average cost)
    b) have a thorough look around on the shelves to make sure there isn't a similar item with a much lower sticker price.

If HMV charged what Zavvi were charging for dvds/blu-ray etc.. they'd be closing up shop pretty soon too. Zavvi tried to match internet retailers' prices but couldnt keep up because of the overheads.

HMV are ridiculous for this for games.

You'll normally see a game for about 50/60 then the same game behind it on the shelf for 25 or 30.

Zavvi went under I think because of Woolworths didn't they ?

Basically Woolworths were their main supplier ( in the UK ) , sothey couldn't order any new stock for the months leading up to Christmas

Or maybe I am wrong ?

    That's what I heard...

Anyways, its HMV's ridiculously high prices that deters me from buying anything in there... I don't know how they keep in business!

I've actually spent more money in Zavvi, than I've EVER spent in HMV... it's a shame that Zavvi went out of business.

In fairness, I find HMV's prices on the classic films (i.e. Total Recall, Event Horizon etc) to be very reasonably priced. However, the price of their World Cinema dvds is disgraceful....saw some Korean films for nearly 40 quid! (and keep in mind these weren't even the good Korean films like Oldboy, A Bittersweet Life etc)

Don't agree with soc, I find for the most part that HMVs prices quite reasonable. Sure certain items are over priced but prices change quite often and you can get some very good deals. In respect to games they're usually much better than their competitors.

You would think that prices would be going down in shops with the way the economy with the credit crunch and the way the euro is against sterling values.
But no, prices are either remaining the same or going up. I do agree with you about HMV. Virgin was one of the cheaper media stores here in this country till the pulled out. Some places can be more expensive than others,. Shopping around to get the best value is the way to go now.

    So who supplies HMV?

Zavvi were wholly supplied by EUK who went bust. HMV buy direct from publishers for the most part.

Could someone tell me why an IPOD classic in HMV on grafton street costs 229 euro and in London HMV works out as 195euro...the exact same model and colour etc. As it turns out I got one in the States for roughly 190euro. Maybe im missing something but i dont get the huge price difference for the exact same model etc.......

    Is there a genuine reason......?

    Curious

there's no reason as you or I would see it. the company has the illusion that the Irish have money to throw around (thanks a lot, Bertie) and so companies usually mark up their price by up to a third from the european norm to try & cash in on it. sometimes, when quizzed on it, they come out with BS "shipping costs" that don't hold under scrutiny, but sometimes, like heineken cup matches, when Irish tickets were thirty euro more than their french counterparts, the spokesman simply says "because the Irish market can take it"

Same here. I can't remember the last time I bought something in HMV, but I've bought a heap of stuff from Zavvi. Even before their closing down sale they were much better value than HMV.

HMV can be fantastic value for money during their sales but more often than not they charge extortinate prices. I picked up JCVD and My Name is Bruce on Blu Ray for just under 30 euro online. The cost of JCVD alone on Blu Ray in HMV is 30 Euro. I also got Felon for 16 euro online about 6 months ago, it's still 37.99 in HMV. Outpost cost me 7 euro online, 20 euro in HMV. Repo the Genetic Opera I got for 18 euro on Blu Ray, HMV have it for 26 or 27 euro.

That said you can find some fantastic bargains, got Saw 4 limited edition set with comic and voice box for only 6 euro. A week before I picked up 8 Below for 5 euro. Shame that more often than not they overcharge and with people willing to pay the prices then they'll never lower prices. Before Christmas a friend of mine went in and ordered Dead Man for 25 euro on DVD, I told him I paid 6 euro online for it a few months before but he said that he would get it in HMV anyway. It's this mentality that sees us being ripped offe every which way.

i work in that paticular store, back in the days of zavvi and virgin all products had a singular price cause they all came from the same supplier (EUK) but in hmv the price varys dramaticly from supplier to spplier, its always best to look around if you see a product at stupid price its probalbley cheaper elsewhere in the shop, also hmv use a sysem where if an item is in a sale one of the items will be kept at full price for auto ordering and inventory reasons and to show the customer the saving so never buy the last cd or dvd cause its probabley on sale normally and you'll end up paying a crazy mark up on this last "Base Stock", ask a member of staff and they'll tell you if its on sale elsewhere

last saturday we were shopping in HMV in cork, they were seling the American dad season's for €13.99 each or a boxset of three seasons together for around or above the €100 mark....it didn't make sense...also i have noticed in there a dvd could be on offer for €9.99 and the EXACT same one would be in the section for €22.99,

once i grabbed a copy of each and handed the more expensive one to be scanned, when i was told "that will be €25 please" i handed over the cheaper copy and asked why one was more expensive....i was swiftly charged the lower price...
