Typical boys' club, as usual. I'm disappointed about Welfare. At least I won't be here next year... :)

    Why what happened?

There was a lot of "he said, she said" going around. I was surprised C&C went off so nicely. Whenever I talked to either of them, they both wanted to have a clean race, not dragging up any old stories about party politics or the like. It was really clean. Fair play to them

President got a dirty between a few of the candidates. Loads of back and forth mudslinging about people's abilities to do the job.

Ah the good ol' D4 ego-stroking fest!
Next stop RTE or the Dail.

Ah right. Petty antics really, no wonder I pay little attention to most of them when in office(without wanting to sound apathetic or that I don't care).

Completely off topic but has anyone noticed the sheer quantity of first years going around repeating manifesto and candidate speeches in order to appear knowledgable about the union. I love first years. They are so stupid :D

It's even funnier how bitter they are when the person they were supporting didn't get in - not even the candidates themselves are that bitter. Silly Freshers...

Not really. Both had very good campaigns going on.

Who on earth is Mike Pat??? Gary Ward was robbed.

You obviously haven't been round UCD long?

Too long, 3 years. I just expect somebody to get elected that would have put in some effort, this Pat guy had no posters up in the arts block or anywhere else for that matter. It seems he only got elected by being a FF poodle, like everyone else except Scott and Paddy.

Well then you haven't been looking. From the 4 years that I've known of Mike Pat he's put more effort into college life then any of the other candidates running. For the SU alone he's been class rep (Don Conroy would vote for him), PRO and accommodation & employment officer, but he's also had a huge involvement for the past 4 years with Ents, running events and doing countless DJing gigs

Back when I was in first year the society people weren't looking too happily on Qsoc as it had not been having enough career events and was turning into yet another party soc. I'd heard they were thinking of shutting down that operation. Mike Pat took it over the following summer and well he must have done something right because its still going now. I think he also won the Iron Stomach that year!

I call your bluff. The Arts block (as you may have noticed) every candidate gets the exact same amount of poster space and the posters are infact put up by the returning officer (or maybe the union but not the candidates I don't think). Engineering was equally covered by his face as Gary Ward's

The ents officer for the year after next has also been chosen I hear. Good results, I hope everyone is happy and It'll be a good union. Lets hope they have it in them to take on fees.

I found a thread from 2004 about the Union then. Its amazing how the exact same things are being said. As they say on Galactica "all this has happened before and it will happen again" :P

If you think Gary Ward was robbed you obviously wernt voting on the experience of the candidates. Ward and Morrisey are both decent guys but they were both Holly Irvine Mark II's just waiting to happen. She was elected (admittedly with Mike Pats help) over other candidates with much more relevant experience and Ents was a complete disaster with most of that years events piggy backed with societies.

From what I've seen Ents is very much not the so called "Clique" I heard spat at me several times during this election but more a meritocracy were you put in your time and you usually get your reward. Mike Pat has given more time to Ents than the other two candidates combined and this was not down to them not having the opportunity but down to the fact that helping out with Ents is not as glamorous as some people think whether it be getting up hungover at 7 every thursday morning to poster, flyering res in the rain when you should be studying, bagging the urinals in the student bar "dressing room", taking in tickets outside the bar when its freezing and all your mates are inside having fun. Its far easier to shy away from getting involved at the bottom and doing work like that and just run straight off for Ents officer calling the people who've done it a "Clique" but Quinlivan, Redmond and Mike Pat spent years paying their dues and eventually got their reward.

So sick of hearing this Qsoc line over and over again.

Mike Pat ran for C&E that year and lost, his only election loss to date, and only took up the job of Qsoc auditor as a last resort.

He did no career events during that year apart from get in Lochlann Quinn and Denis O'Brien as speakers. Lochlann Quinn being appointed lifetime president of the society had more to do with the continuation of the society than anything.

Would have been very embarrasing for the school if a society with his name was let to die.

Oh and Johnny Cosgrove won the Iron Stomach that year.

im happy with how everything went apart from the Gary Redmond situation...although thats only because he was the only candidate who i was never approached by and therefore dont know a thing about him or his plans. i just hope that he does well for the students.

As every general election and edition of Top of The Pops has proved, the majority of the people are wrong the majortiy of the time. :pac:

    1177.jpg
Spot Pender and Redmond....they'll be joined by their buddies Donnacha and Mike-Pat next year...fairwell free tuition fees scheme.

    Anyways heres some results

    referendum results

    total % For: 82% Against: 18%
totall votes For: 4918 Against: 881 Spolit 167

    President
    Total %
    1st count - Bond: 22% (1103) Brophy 17% (854) Hanratty: 28% (1424) Redmond: 30% (1522)

Hanratty dominated Health Sciences, Redmond did likewise in Quinn. Brophy won arts but did poorly everywhere else (with the exception of Science). Redmond was second in arts where Bond was third & a handful of votes from coming last. The one faculty Bond managed to win was Engineering.

    Communications
    1st Count - Fitzer 36% Ryan 58% RON 6%
Ryan beat Fitzer in almost every faculty. Oddly enough, Fitzer took Carysfort

    Education
    Kim Foy 36% McCormack 13% Donnacha 44% RON 7%
Donnacha dominated. Kim Foy won arts.

    Welfare
    Ahearn 54% Pender 41% Ron 4%
Close enough with Ahearn winning most faculties. Health Science was crucial for him, beating Pender by over 300 in the one faculty.

    Ents
Morrisey 32% Mike Pat 40% Gary Ward 27%
Couldn't give a toss about ents if I'm honest. Still would have liked to have seen Ward get elected.

That picture actually makes me a little sick. The hypocrisy of these candidates is unreal. All nominees for the Students Union should have to disclose their political allegiances on their material because I'm sure some people would take that into account in voting for someone who declares themselves as anti-fees!

possibly because they are members of a political party that are advocating the return of fees? just a hunch.

doesnt mean they want to see fees reintroduced... their job is to have the students best interest in mind, political affiliations have nothing to do with it.

You are correct, they are for the return of fees. I think there will be a lot of friction between FEE and the SU next year when the Union dont do their job properly.

Are they? Maybe there will be friction next year but I think that will have to do with the type of action that the union wants to take conflicting with what FEE wants to do but I really dont think that the union wants the reintroduction of fees and I do believe they will do their best to stop fees.

It has everything to do with it. Gary Redmond and Donnacha O'Suilleabhan are both supporters and members of a political party that supports the reintroduction of fee's and is encouraging the commercialisation and corportisation of third level education and research.

Personally I think its underhand and sneaky If you do not state your membership of a political party. But I guess lying is fianna fails general approach to elections wether they be student elections or national. Have to laugh at the 'Vote Fianna Fail for jobs' pic from last years general elections, considering we're heading towards 450,000 unemployed point.
