Personally I think its underhand and sneaky If you do not state your membership of a political party.

This. especially when it is a party that support the reintroduction of fees. to say that it won't have any impact is ridiculous, its a clash of interests.

It has everything to do with it. Gary Redmond and Donnacha O'Suilleabhan are both supporters and members of a political party that supports the reintroduction of fee's and is encouraging the commercialisation and corportisation of third level education and research.

But I guess lying is fianna fails general approach to elections wether they be student elections or national. Have to laugh at the 'Vote Fianna Fail for jobs' pic from last years general elections, considering we're heading towards 450,000 unemployed point.

I think you'll find that Donnacha is no longer a member of fianna fail.

Also I cant see why people here think that they would support the reintroduction of fees when it would stop themselves, their family and their friends from continuing their education.

In fairness to O'Suilleabhan, he's stated that if a "FF vs SU" situation were to arise, he'd resign from FF. And according to crashers, he's already done so.

I've been laughing at what they've been saying for years. Nowadays I feel more like crying every time one of them opens their mouth. About two weeks ago Mary Coughlan was telling us there was no problem with the public finances

I still have enough faith in humanity to believe that those who have put themselves forward and won this election will put the students they represent before political affiliations. Hopefully that faith won't be betrayed next year.

It would've been interesting to see how well they would have done had they had a fianna fail logo at the bottom of their posters and manifestos.

They're not running as FF candidates.. Why would they do that? People are voting for them, and not their party.. I voted for Paddy Ryan and I would never vote FG in an election

Mainly because it colours their attitudes.
A big deal was made in the observer of Chris Bond's labour party activity.

Exactly, the same last year with Dan O'Neills involvement with labour youth.
active membership of a political party will influence their involvement in the SU and people should know about it imo.

Every candidate clearly outlined their objectives for the year (or at least attempted to) so I cant see how anyone could call them sneaky. Do people think that Gary Redmond and Brian Cowen regularly meet and conspire about how to reintroduce fees? Membership of a political party just really shows an interest in politics, not some sort of government led conspiracy to control students.

Candidates should have been simply judged on their competency to do the job and having the intelligence to do the job. For example, a certain candidate was looking into getting Lily Allen to do a gig in the bar and when interviewed by the Observer they thought the President of UCD was Aodhan Ó Dea. I didnt know or care about their political affiliations in making my decision not to vote for them.
