Thinkin bout gettin HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1)

My brothers goin to the USA in 2 weeks and I'm wondering if He were to pick up A HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) over there would it be useable here or would it need to be unlocked? Also Where would he get one? Anyone here bring one back?
