No you dont have to join the Reserves before joining the guards full time however if you were/are a member of the Reserves it would certainly help in your application for full time cos you would know something about the job.

You apply for the Reserves and fulltime through www.publicjobs.ie. You need to register with the site and register an interest in Garda or Reserves. You will receive an email then of current or future campaigns.

garda trainee = civilian..... garad reserve = paid nominal fee and have very limited powers and access to PULSE.

Garda Trainee/student garda - is training and learning to become a career member of AGS and will go through the college program, be attached and mingle with full time members and a unit and instructors to learn. They go through the phase 1 - 3 program (over a year of training) at the end of which they are attested and become probabtioner Gardai

Garda Reserve - Part time member who goes through a shorter version of the program with limited powers etc...
I suppose Reserves would be of benefit (for a taste of garda life) but not essential for joining full time.
