Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi all, I'm hoping someone may be able to help with a query about the cost of root canal treatment.

I'm based in Galway and my dentist told me its an extraction or root canal but I need to see a specialist with approx cost of 1000 euro. As I'm currently on the medical card I'm been told that this treatment is not not available as this type of treatment is not covered with the medial card. I'm hoping that someon may be able to suggest a good specialist that wont be charging this vast amount of money. Can anyone help ?

    Thanks.

Oh god I pity you, it is so so painfull.... cost me around 600 with a few filliings in Tipperary, 1000 seems to high.....

take 2 weeks off work and stock up on the strongest painkillers you can find....

euGril, the reason for the high cost is that the person you are being referred to is an expert/specialist in endodontics (root canal treatments) and therefore more expensive than a general dentist. Your dentist has examined your tooth and due to its anatomy/morphology/extent of infection etc advises you that your best chance of keeping the tooth is to have it treated by an expert.

I'm afraid the previous post is probably the last thing you want to read, ignore it. Root canal treatments can sometimes be painful afterwards but rarely do patients experience anything more than tenderness for a day or so.

Unfortunately the medical card as far as i know does not cover any tooth further back than the canines and will not cover a specialist's treatment costs. The alternative is to seek treatment from another general dentist who might be very good at root treatments, the standard of treatment may be close to a specialist but not quite, ask around your friends and famaily.

Drunkmonkey, this person is possibly in pain and worried about losing a tooth, your post is insensitive to say the least. Try to add something constructive to the forum if you are capable.

It's only painful if you have an abcess and even then the dentist will usually give you antibiotics to reduce it before he will do the root canal!

I've had two in my life, one when I was a teenager and had an abcess..for some reason I wasn't sent home with antibiotics and told to come back..it was incredibly painful and I think was sore for a day or two afterwards. Had one done for cosmetic reasons a few years ago and it was absolutely fine as the tooth was healthy.

I had root canal treatment on 3 teeth to day at most it was slightly uncomfortable. My teeth were/are in very bad condition mainly due to my fear of the dentist however I found a dentist who made me relax and now I can even sleep the night before my appointment as for a more affordable root canal I wll pm his details if you want he is in the north and the price for my treatment is €2400 compared to €5000 in the south this is for a lot of work.
