Staff at a Tesco branch refused to sell wine to a mother just in case she gave it to her 14-year-old daughter.

Fraud investigator Karen Dumelow, 46, and her daughter Emily were at the check-out when a cashier said she could not serve her in case the wine was given to the youngster. She had been about to pay for two bottles of white wine at the Portsmouth store while doing her weekly shopping with her daughter.

She spoke to three senior members of staff who agreed with the cashier who had wanted to see identification for the teenager. But because Emily was unable to do so Mrs Dumelow was told she could not buy the wine. Seems a bit OTT, could it happen in Tesco Ireland?

It might seem unfair, and probably only happens once in a blue moon, but how were the staff to know that the teenager was her daughter?

It doesn't really matter who she is tbh because she wasn't the one buying the wine

There was a similar story before iirc involving someone not being allowed to buy jack daniels barbeque sauce

And a passport can get you past immigration in any country in the world but only a garda ID is good enough for tesco

Well generally, if someone was to buy drink for a teenager, do they really think the teenager would actually walk into the shop with them?? Common sense seems to be lacking in a lot of places and people these days.

All this probably seems silly until a big supermarket does get caught out and has to close for a week or worse loses it's licence.

In my opinion, if you have any doubt, at all, don't serve the customer.

In the worst case scenario, the assistant would get a warning for customer complaint or a equality law suit!!

thats mental.tesco are awful for that kind of thing;they refuse to accept passports as id sometimes, only accept age cards(which you need a passport for:confused:)

id say it was very obvious that the mother was buying the wine for herself,it was in with her weekly shopping!i mean, even if the kid DID end up drinking the wine, how would it be tescos fault??
