I believe there's a private lake where they stock carp somewhere in Laois.

There's probably 10-20 carp venues in the country, it'll help if I know where the guys coming over will be based.

I see, and would there be any located in Connaught?

    In the Shannon catchment, yes.
    Look at Lakelands http://www.lakelandfishery.com/
But the far west counties of Galway and Mayo ie over a different geology and the lakes there are not fertile enough to support carp.

    Name: Angle Grove
Very picturesque lake of 2 acres with carp to 17lb. Run by Roman Duell and costs 20.00 euro a day.

Location: Just outside Woodford Co Galway on the Allendara Road. Carp fishery

http://www.cfb.ie/fishing_in_ireland/coarse/carp.htm lists some fisheries which have carp. They don't mention Maynooth Fisheries which has carp as well I believe.

Maynooth is a day ticket water, has Carp to 30lbs+.

Plenty of free fishing available for wild Tench, if they pop into whereever the local tackle shop is they should put them on the right track. If they'll be near Navan, then Anglers World (http://www.anglersworld.ie) would be a good spot for some advice on where to fish.

    if closer to Dublin then:
    Southside Angling (http://southsideangling.ie/)
    Henrys Tackle (http://www.henrystackleshop.com/contact_us.php)

Probably a few more could be added to that list, that's all I know of personally.

Lots of tench fishing in the Midlands and the Northeast. Not many willing to post locations on a public forum though. Lakes around Cavan, Mongahan and Longford had populations of tench introduced through the late 50's and on many occasions forgotten about by indigenous anglers.

The Royal Canal west of and aroung Mullingar used to offer good tenching but this has suffered to 'predation' during the boom years. There are people who eat both carp and tench, large and small.

There were large carp to 35lbs in a well known Cavan lake up to two years ago. Very difficult to snag. Off the top would be worth a go if we get a hot summer:D. You'd need to spot them off the trees which line the whole lake. But they mign't still be in residence.

Monaghan/Cavan lakes did have a large head of tench with chance of large slabs thrown in, but have been hammered.

Large parts of those counties are on limestone geology (e.g. Corrib catchment) and are definitely fertile enough. The Corrib for instance supports huge stocks of bream in certain areas. The reason there aren't carp is they are not native fish and stocking them would be illegal. Only existing carp fisheries and newly created habitats (dug out ponds) can possibly be legally stocked with carp.

There are some good tench lakes in Clare, check the specimen fish records for some locations.
