    I can't login... hmmm.

Anyone else having trouble getting access? I've been trying to get in for a good few hours now and... zilch!

I'm getting worried.. got me some assignments to submit.

I emailed moodle support but haven't gotten anything back, I assume (and hope for their sanity!) that they work 9-5? Yes?

Sorry, I thought you plebs got these e-mails too:
    Dear ...,

As you will have been aware, we have been experiencing serious technical difficulties with Moodle since yesterday evening.

While the source of the problem was identified early this morning, it has taken a long time to resolve, and colleagues in the Computer Centre feel it is essential to check the system fully before you make further edits, or students undertake further activities, as these could be lost if the system is not functioning properly.

Therefore, the decision has been taken to take Moodle offline for this weekend.

We sincerely regret the difficulties this will no doubt cause to you.

We have responded to student queries throughout today and will continue to do so, but we need to advise all departments that students may not have been able to submit coursework or other submissions since yesterday evening. We will be able to follow up on any and all critical work next week when the system is back online - please contact moodlesupport@nuim.ie in relation to any work you are concerned about, or any other queries you may have.

Once again, our apologies for the sudden outage with the system and the ongoing difficulties today. I will update with you again as soon as possible on Monday.

    best regards,
    Claire

From the lovely people at Moodle:
The site is undergoing maintenance and is currently not available

Moodle will be offline over the weekend. Updates will be posted on Monday 9 March 2009.

The Computer Centre Apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Ah well. At least I don't have two lab tests next week that I need notes for. Oh wait, no, I do have two lab tests next week that I need notes off moodle for.

I wonder what the problem is that it's gonna take all weekend to fix it, or is the computer center not open over the weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    See my previous post.

Hmmmm.....I needed notes my lecturer put up to do my analysis of an interview for Sociology.

Gah! I dislike moodle right now...

Yeah I had a gepgraphy assignment to submit today at five too. Moodle said they notified all lecturers about it so we were given and extension until Monday, although now they're saying it's gonna be out all weekend and *should* be back by Monday, here's hoping.

    *It's ugly
    *User unfriendly
*So insecure it needs a double login from off campus
    *No categories
*No search or anything else of somewhat use
    *No embedding whatsoever
    *No RSS
*No stats such as join date, etc.
    *No user post count
    *No reputation.
    *No report button.
    *No infractions.
*No viewing of a specific post.
    *No latest post.
    *No forum icon.
    *No moving stuff around,
*No ''new posts'' indication in thread list
*You have to login to email, moodle and studentweb seperately

    To **** with moodle.

So bad it gets a lolcat:

Just use Google Documents. You'll thank me later.

Moodle doesn't have post counts, search functions etc because that's not its purpose.

Looks fine to me, and aesthetics are hardly the focus of the site.

Maybe you're not that good at using computers, but I don't know anyone who finds Moodle too hard to use (And there are workshops for it I believe). After all, the people using it are studying at a 3rd level institution, you'd think they'd have a few brain cells knocking around.
    banquo wrote: »

Unless you've actually studied computer/network security this statement is unfounded.
    banquo wrote: »

    Bit vague there.
    banquo wrote: »

You're not meant to have such a mass of files on it that you'd actually need to search. If I want my notes on a specific module, it's a safe enough guess that they'd be on the module's page.
    banquo wrote: »

Embedding of what? Flowers? Mobile development? Be more specific.
    banquo wrote: »
    *No RSS

A feature I'm willing to bet more than 80% of Moodle users are unaware of and 90% don't use.
    banquo wrote: »

It's an academic content management system, not a forum.
    banquo wrote: »
    *No user post count

    See above.
    banquo wrote: »

    Again with the vague statements.
    banquo wrote: »
    *No report button.

It's not that hard to email a lecturer. Not as if someone would be stupid enough to post anything that would warrant reporting anyway.
    banquo wrote: »

    Not a forum.
    banquo wrote: »

Hardly a "to die for" feature.
    banquo wrote: »

You're complaining about artsy aesthetic stuff too much.
    banquo wrote: »
    *No moving stuff around,

As a student you have no need to move stuff around on it. Content is presented for you, not supplied by you.
    banquo wrote: »
*No ''new posts'' indication in thread list

Yes there is, try actually looking at your options.
    banquo wrote: »
*You have to login to email, moodle and studentweb seperately

Finally, a valid point. This annoys me a bit too, but they are completely separate services so it'd be a security risk to combine them all.
    banquo wrote: »

Google Docs (You forgot the BETA) is completely different to Moodle. It's an online office suite, not a content management system like Moodle.

You've obviously got the wrong ideas about what Moodle is supposed to be.

I thought lack of security was the given reason for the double log in?

It was a precaution, to stop things like DDos attacks that could be launched from outside the University

    Could Dodos attack moodle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Well extinction kind of prohibits it but with technological advances you never know :p

@Banquo: Surely Google Documents is better suited to be used for research... It doesn't really serve the same function as Moodle...
I do, however, appreciate the LOLcat. :pac:

Others have done a good job on this. One other important thing - it's free and open source. You could, for instance, be stuck with Blackboard...which is very expensive and less intuitive.
    *No report button.
    *No infractions.

These are both built in - probably never used though.

It's not perfect - no course-wide search is a feature that could be added, and not being able to customise or control the way the blocks are laid out is another. I believe that newer builds have the second.

*You have to login to email, moodle and studentweb seperately

Of course - they're all distinct and use different software. Just like ya have to log in to yahoo, amazon, hotmail, boards.ie (:p) separately.

Mine you, it being offline for the weekend is a pain in the ass.

Well technically DoS attacks could still be launched on it, but the main reason for it was that a security bug was found in the moodle software that could be (and may actually have been in NUIM's case) exploited. The double login means that anyone off campus has to get through Apache's security as well, so both systems would have to have vulnerabilities to be exploited.

It hardly stands as a reason to say that moodle is bad though, as virtually any CMS or forum software out there will have some vulnerability or other that just may not have been discovered yet. Why do you think all of them release periodic updates that don't add any features, for crying out loud?!
