imo yes. phoenix park for example, the largest urban park in the whole of europe. personally i think dublin is great, really as someone who would like to live in other european cities, i still wouldn't be that pushed about moving anywhere else. i think people need to open their eyes and take advantage. maby if your a fat mess the city doesnt offer much but if your active it does

I think you'd have to travel far and wide before finding a capital city with the coast line we have here in Dublin.

The true Dublin charactor is legendary, for the younger guys here who missed 'Strumpet City' - buy it on DVD ASAP.

With all its faults, which are many and mostly the fault of poor planning, local & national government policy - its my favourite place in the world.

    Good thread OP.

i think dublin is very underrated considering its small population in terms of other capital cities.plenty of larger cities that have nothing in comparison.

i think in terms of going out we dont know how lucky we have it.ive had plenty of friends over from scotland/england and theyve had the time of their lives in dublin.
the atmosphere in pubs here, you just dont get it anywhere else.
ive been on nights out in a lot of major cities-NY,boston,vegas,LA,san diego, and none come close.some were downright ****. closer to home been to london a few times, glasgow, manchester and while they were good there was something lacking. suppose when we have it every weekend we get used to it, almost get tired of it but theres a reason folks so many people come here for pissup weekends.because its good!
clubbing wise we wont beat places like london due to the opening hours etc but in terms of pubs and bars dublin nails it i think!

this is just going from a going out point of view but i think dublin is underrated in loads of ways.

I agree. There is not many cities where you have access to a beautiful coastline as you rightly mentioned with places such as 40 Foot, Killiney, Dalkey and Sorrento, fine parks such as Phoenix Park and Marlay Parks, Dublin mountains and the upper Liffey which is actually very beautiful, the canals of Dublin and many, many other places full of Dublin charm.

I watched it when it was first shown back in the 80's. What a fine production. Just wondering if that is where our resident Rashers gets his name from. :)

I can only really add to the sentiments already expressed. I have friends who "hate" Dublin when they've never been to places like Howth or Tallaght or half the places in Dublin. I've been all over and if i hear of a place i haven't been, i try to make it a point to get their and meet the people.

It really depends on what you're looking for. I have no interest in nature and think Dublin's quite lacking in comparison to other cities. Also There is a large minority (Yes I meant it that way) that ruin the city's atmosphere imo

Dublin's great. I hate people giving out about it. Sure it has it's faults, but they're far outnumbered by the positives. I've been to a lot of other cities, and Dublin always wins; hands down.

I brought my cousins (from Glasgow) out on the town last night, and they loved it. I was proud to show them around the city I've called home for the last 5 years.

Do we underrate Dublin? I don't, but a lot do.

Yeppers. I watched when it was first shown. Then I aquired it on VHS tapes, and then the DVD boxed set was given to me as a Christmas present.

You can guess who my favourite character was. ;)

You see I grew up in a time when everyone in the Dublin I lived knew a 'Rashers'.... a real one.

Things may not have been any better in fact in many ways were much grimmer but it was inhabited by larger than life characters the likes of which will never be seen again.

I still remember me ma telling me stories of how she would cross the road in Crumlin because she could see a very drunken, bawdy Brendan Behan lurching towards her or my grandfather telling me stories of Dublin characters by the names of Johnny Forty Coats, The Whistler and Bang Bang.

I love Dublin and hate the way people constantly diss it.

Now I will be the first to admit that I got bored of it when I was 21, hence my move over here, but having spent 3 weeks home last month I can safely say that it's the place I want to grow old in. Absolutely fantastic made all the better by the characters who live there.

We're lucky to have it, and some of us know it. Those that don't I have nothing but sympathy for.

Manchester is great, that's just from the point of view of a southerner that likes more friendliness then here. But in all honesty, does it make that much difference where you go out? Maybe I'm just a boring introvert in that sense....

I think Dublin can be under-rated by people in general and it oftens stems from a lack of knowledge. For example, I work with people from the country who constantly refer to Dublin as a kip, a Sh1t-hole, etc., yet when questioned, it's obvious they've never been beyond the suburb they live in other than the odd trip to Henry Street, or across the city on the train. They've never walked Dollymount, Howth Head, or Portmarnock Beach, never been to Marlay Park, the Hellfire club, the Casino in Marinoi, or any other spot that Dubliners like to go to. Dublin has so much to offer, if one opens one's eyes and has a good look about. There is something of interst on so many streets in the city centre, and if you're into the arts, or culture, or history, the city is brimful of things to see.
If you're into nature, both sides of the city have so much to offer in terms of coastline, and parks, with the Pheonix Park also strectching almost into the city centre itself.

So why do people moan about Dublin: from being on here it tends to be mainly prices, skangers, and traffic. Yet all of these apply to any other city in Ireland, and for that matter Europe and the rest of the world.
Ignore those non-Dublin specific things, and Dublin is a city worth a much higher rating than it gets.

Like any other city it has it's skanger element, but no more and no less than any other major city i've been to.

What's the Hellfire Club, and where do I sign up?

The Iveagh Gardens is the best kept secret in the WORLD, so don't go there and spoil it on me...
